Maria Balinska (born 1960) is an American journalist and author who is the Executive Director of the US-UK Fulbright Commission[2], a binational educational organization whose alumni include British P.M. Rishi Sunak.[3]

Before joining the Fulbright Commission, Balinska was part of the launch team for The Conversation U.S., a nonprofit news website that gets academics to write for the public, and then its Managing Editor and later Editor-in-Chief. [4][5] She cited its use of Creative Commons licensing as a key part of The Conversation's growth and success.[6]

Born in New Jersey, she attending 10 schools in five countries before attending Princeton University. By her own account, she became interested in journalism after the fall of Communism, reporting on the transformation of Poland as a freelance journalist.[7]

She spent a decade as a radio producer and then Editor World Current Affairs at the BBC, launching a number of shows, including the award-winning documentary series Crossing Continents.[8][9] In 2010 she was a Nieman Fellow.[10]

In 2011, she started up a website Latitude News, which aimed to connect American readers with international news by emphasizing coverage that showed how it related to their lives.[1] [11][12][13]. The site published its final article, a story on Russia adopting US laws for child protection produced in collaboration with the Eurasia Foundation on 6 September 2014.[14]

In 2008, she published a history of the bagel, tracing its roots from ancient Rome to Poland to its flourishing in America.[15]. She became interested in the topic while studying in Krakow, Poland.[16] The topic spoke to her Polish and Jewish roots, and allowed her to explore various historical topics in addition to food customs.[17] She says the growth in popularity and fondness for the bagel arose from America's growing interest in ethnic foods and acceptance of Jewish culture.[18]
