Marcus Kolga is a Canadian-Estonian journalist, human rights activist, and expert on Russian disinformation and foreign influence operations. He is known for his advocacy on issues related to democracy, media freedom, and human rights in Eastern Europe and Russia. Kolga is the founder of DisinfoWatch, a platform dedicated to exposing and countering foreign disinformation targeting Canada and other Western democracies. He frequently contributes to major Canadian news outlets and is an outspoken critic of authoritarian regimes, particularly Russia. Kolga's work includes analyzing propaganda tactics and promoting transparency in foreign influence activities.
Career and Advocacy
Kolga has played a pivotal role in exposing Kremlin-aligned disinformation campaigns and advocating for stronger policies against authoritarian influence in Canada. He is also known for his activism leading the Canadian campaign for Magnitsky sanctions, which target corrupt officials and human rights abusers.
Awards and Recognition
In 2015 Kolga was named to the Estonian Order of the White Star by President Toomas Hendrik Ilves for his efforts to advocate and raise awareness of Estonian issues around the world.
In 2017, he was awarded a Magnitsky Human Rights award, for his leadership of the Canadian Magnitsky campaign and to hold global human rights abusers to account.
In 2022, Kolga received the Latvian Ministry of Defence Medal of Honorary Recognition from Artis Pabriks, Latvia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence. This award was given in recognition of his efforts to advance Baltic security and advocate for closer cooperation between Canada and the Baltic states. The award is one of the highest honors conferred by Latvia’s Ministry of Defence and acknowledges Kolga’s contributions to promoting security ties between Canada and Latvia
