Kitty O'Neal, also known as march is an independent British singer-songwriter and artist born in Claygate, Surrey. In 2023 she was named as one of Glastonbury Festival's long-listed emerging talents,[1] after playing for the first time at the festival in 2019 on The Spike.[2] Her debut album, released in 2021,[3] was funded by Help Musicians UK 'Do it Differently' fund.
Career
editKitty O'Neal started performing under the alias march in 2019, after spending multiple years on the South UK Coast gigging circuit whilst a student at University of Southampton.
In 2019, march released her debut EP Wear Me Down.[4] It was written and recorded from her bedroom in Southampton whilst studying music.[5] The title track appeared in BBC Radio 6 Music presenter and musician Tom Robinson's Fresh Faves,[6] and was recorded as a live version for the BBC Radio Solent live lounge.[7] Her debut album All of the Above was released in 2021 on her DIY label Snail Tape Records,[8] receiving attention from Folk Radio UK[9] and BBC Radio 6.[10] Whilst studying for her MA in songwriting, march received ICMP's Accelerator Fund[11] to support this release, as well as receiving a 'Do it Differently' grant from Help Musicians UK. In February 2022, the album was launched with a live string quartet and full band at The Stage Door, Southampton to a sold-out crowd.[12]
In 2023, she released five-track EP Greens and Blues, receiving airplay from BBC Introducing on Radio 6,[13] BBC 3 Counties and BBC Radio Solent. She performed the EP, including single When We Get Old for BBC Introducing.[14]
Her third EP Cross St Demos is due for release in 2024, and will be the first entirely self-produced release from the songwriter.
