"MAGA Communism" is a political slogan that emerged in September 2022. It argues that the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement is a symbol representing anti-elite sentiment and proposes unity between the MAGA movement and Communism. MAGA Communists believe that this partnership can lead to a populist revolution benefiting the working class and American prosperity. Proponents, led by Haz Al-Din and Jackson Hinkle, aim to reject identity politics, American imperialism, and leftism within communism. Critics view it as a potentially alt-right fusion of authoritarian MAGA and communism, lacking ideological consistency and appealing to those disillusioned with liberalism.

Background edit

"MAGA Communism" is a political slogan that gained popular attention around September 2022. Supporters of MAGA Communism argue that those who care about the working class should ally with the MAGA movement to incite a populist revolution.[1] MAGA Communists believe that the MAGA movement represents the singular mass working-class and anti-establishment movement present in America today[2] and that this movement, being outside of the status-quo, allows more opportunity for more radical politics.[3] They believe that communism can serve as a force for American prosperity, working-class unity, and they emphasize patriotic strength and the benefit of the common good.[1]

MAGA Communists criticize liberal culture wars and identity politics and reject American imperialism.[1] They are outspoken critics of leftists for "demonizing MAGA supporters as inherently racist, xenophobic, and so on,"[2] Haz Al-Din, one of the creators of MAGA Communism, believes that Trump "fundamentally and irreversibly changed American politics". Al-Din believes that the MAGA movement is not a singular coherent ideology, but rather a "symbol of anti-elite struggle that remains open to the construction of a wide range of political identities."[3] He also believes that Communists should support MAGA people and writes: "the primary contradiction in American politics is between MAGA and the status quo". MAGA Communists seek to salvage the anti-establishment and anti-imperialist aspects of the movement and make communism appealing to working-class people by removing the "toxic ideology of leftism" from communism.[3] New Republic writes that MAGA Communists combine American nationalism with support of Chinese President Xi Jinping.[4]

Compact argues that the goals of MAGA Communism aren't entirely clear: "Does it seek to unite people from the far left and far right under the same anti-elite umbrella, without challenging the ideologies of the various factions, as Hinkle would appear to be suggesting? Or does it aim to transcend existing ideologies and the left-right political spectrum altogether to create a new “populist” working class-elites spectrum, as Al-Din seems to imply?"[3]

On 1 October 2022, Haz Al-Din attended a Trump rally at Macomb Community College in Warren, Michigan to interview Trump supporters about MAGA Communism. Although skeptical, event attendees interjected with affirmation.[1]

Key Figures edit

MAGA Communism was popularized by Marxist-Leninist political commentators Haz Al-Din and Jackson Hinkle.[3]

Criticism edit

Some critics see MAGA Communism as an alt-right spin to combine aspects of "authoritarian MAGA" with communism. Others criticize it for a perceived lack of ideological consistency and its appeal to people disillusioned with liberalism.[1]
