Lu Fulu (born 1932), originally named Lu Yu-ting, is an actor in Peking opera and an actor-director in Taiwanese opera. While Lu was born in Taiwan, his ancestral home is Daxing, Beijing. In 2015, He was awarded the Special Award in Traditional Theater Performance at the 26th Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music.[1][2][3]

Brief introduction edit

Lu Fulu is a well-known actor of laosheng (a dignified older male role) in Taiwanese opera, especially notable for his sophisticated portrayal of antagonistic laosheng. Lu was the son of Lu Chien-ting, who was a Hebei Bangzi and Peking opera actor in a Shanghai performing troupe that started his career in Taiwan in 1926. Having been performing for over six decades in indoor Taiwanese opera, street performance troupes (so-called “troupes that sell medicines”), TV Taiwanese opera, outdoor Taiwanese opera, and theatrical Taiwanese opera, Lu witnessed the development and changes of Taiwanese opera. In recent years, Lu has devoted himself to organizing the oral documents and participating in public affairs of Taiwanese opera, making him a respected Taiwanese opera artist of quality and skills.[4][5]

Career in TV Taiwanese opera edit

Lu started his performing career in TV Taiwanese opera since 1966. He was seen in Taiwan Television (TTV)’s Cheng Sheng Tien Ma Opera Troupe, Lien Tung Opera Troupe, Lien Ho Opera Troupe, and Yang Li-hua Taiwanese Opera Troupe; China Television Company (CTV)’s Huang Hsiang-lien Taiwanese Opera Troupe, Chinese Television System (CTS)’s Li Ju-lin Taiwanese Opera Troupe and Yeh Ching Taiwanese Opera Troupe; Sanlih Entertainment Television (SET)’s Miaokou Taiwanese Opera. Lu also frequently appears on TV series and TV advertisements. Lu has directed works including large-scale Taiwanese opera Sheng Lou Ba Shi.

In the publication of oral history collected by Professor Hsu Ya-hsiang Uttering a Long Cry: Fu-lu on Stage, Lu claimed that the performances to his greatest satisfaction were the ones where he played Lei Ying (The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants) and Kuo Huai (A Civet for a Prince) during the time when TTV presented “United Taiwanese Opera Troupe” on television.
