The oldest rookie at the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), he is assigned to the Mid-Wilshire Division. He was studying at Pennsylvania State University but dropped out and went into the construction business upon learning that Sarah, his girlfriend and later wife, was pregnant. At the age of 45, Nolan closed his construction company in Pennsylvania and after taking down a robbery suspect at a bank in his hometown of Foxburg, Pennsylvania, moved out west to become a police officer. He is divorced with a son, Henry. Nolan became a training officer in the later seasons to teach the next generation of cops and help make positive change in the LAPD.

His training officer in Season 1 was newly-promoted LAPD Officer Talia Bishop. However, after her move to the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, Nolan's training officer until the first episode of Season 4 was former undercover Detective Nyla Harper. He married Bailey Nune in the sixth season.

In "Life and Death", Lopez was abducted and along with Jackson, who was shot and killed while trying to save her. Lopez was held hostage by La Fiera, who planned to take Lopez's baby once it was born and kill Lopez. Once her LAPD colleagues rescued her, Lopez's shot was the one that killed La Fiera during their escape. After a brief time jump or "Three months later", it was shown that Lopez had safely given birth to a baby boy and named the baby Jackson, after her former rookie. She paid respect to Jackson's grave and wished he could've been around to see her son.

Abigail dropped out of college in Season Two, and in Season Three Henry told his dad that he too had dropped out of college to take a job with a global charitable organization run by Ben McRee.

While Henry was in Los Angeles training for his new job, he passed out and was taken to the hospital, where he found out that the surgery he had as a child had caused problems in adulthood. He had a choice between a less invasive procedure, which would have to be followed up with a major operation in five years, or open heart surgery to replace his failing heart valve. In spite of the prospect of a long recovery and giving up his new job, Henry decided to have the open heart surgery. Stanton saw the beating, but refused to help West after their snap fight earlier. He lied that he didn't know about West getting attacked, but because an LAPD's body cam automatically records the two minutes prior to its activation, Stanton's deliberate inaction was caught on footage, which was then viewed by Grey and Bradford. At the end of the episode, Stanton was placed on administrative leave and made to surrender his badge and gun, pending IA investigation. Stanton returned in "Triple Duty", where he was shown to have appealed his termination and won. With his successful termination appealed, he was reinstated in the LAPD by the Police Commissioner and the Board of Rights, demoted to Police Officer II, stripped of his FTO role and seniority, and assigned to the Hollywood Division. Grey and West reached out to Stanton's new watch commander, Sergeant Stella Porter, who agreed to show her division Stanton's bodycam video footage of the attack on West at the Manor Apartments, exposing Stanton for deliberately refused to take action as a training aid, resulting in Stanton's colleagues changing their opinion of him.
