Lieven L. Litaer (born 1980) is a Belgian expert in the Klingon language who resides in Germany.[1]
Early life and education
editLitaer was born in Mol, Belgium and moved to Saarland with his family in 1986. He is an architect.[2]
Lectures
editIn 2002, Litaer founded a weekend-long language course in Germany called qepHom ('large gathering'),[2] which has taken place annually since 2002 in Saarbrücken.[3] He also gives lectures at various public events as well as at universities and museums.
Wikis
editIn 2006, Lieven Litaer outsourced the former Klingon Wikipedia into its own wiki.[citation needed]
Creating the Klingon Language Wiki in 2014, Lieven Litaer set up the largest reference work on the Klingon language.
Television
editLieven Litaer has been on television several times to represent the Klingon language and to talk about his own experiences. He was hired to translate and read the introduction words for a German children show named "Die Sendung mit der Maus" (The Show with the Mouse).[4]
During the promotion tour of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, Litaer was hired to translate and act an advertisement for Netflix in Klingon, which was aired on different online channels worldwide.[5]
Later that year, he provided Klingon subtitles for the first season of Star Trek: Discovery.[6][7]
Publications
editLitaer was involved in the revision of the German version of The Klingon Dictionary in 2013, and in 2017 published with the same publisher a book of learner exercises for Klingon.
One year later, he published ta'puq mach, his Klingon translation of The Little Prince, which was awarded the Deutscher Phantastik Preis in 2019.[8][9]
In 2019, the German company of travel phrase books Reise Know-How published a Klingon travel guide written by Litaer.
Feeling obliged to provide new literature for Klingon learners,[10] Litaer translated Alice's Adventures in Wonderland into Klingon, which was published in 2021.[11]
At the end of 2021, Litaer founded his own publishing house, Egpyt Verlag, in order to publish works of specialized interest.[12] Egpyt has published both works of his own and Klingon translations by others.[13]
