Lars Harmsen is a Professor of Typography and Design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund since 2011.[1] . He is the co-founder of Slanted Publishers.[2]

Career

After completing an apprenticeship as a silk screen frame manufacturer, Lars Harmsen studied visual communication in Basel and at Pforzheim University. During his studies, he founded the design agency MAGMA in Karlsruhe in 1995.[3]

In 1996, he founded the font publisher Volcano-Type.[4]

In 2004, he co-founded the publishing house Slanted Publishers.[2] It's publications won awards in national and international design competitions. Among others it received the Designpreis der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany) (Silver, 2009)[5] and the German Design Award (2018) for its book on Helsinki.[6]

The focus of Harmsen's work is on typography, corporate, and editorial design. He worked as a creative director of MAGMA untill 2014[7].

Since 2008, he acted partner and creative director at MELVILLE Brand Design in Munich[8]

In 2018, he was Associate Professor of Art and Design at the American University of Sharjah.[9]
