The LNER Sentinel railcars were a series of 80 gear-driven steam railcars used by the London and North Eastern Railway.

From April 1928, Diagram 89 railcar No.237 Rodney was used for passenger operations on the Forge Valley Line between Pickering and Scarborough, before being joined by Diagram 96 railcar No.2136 Hope in December of that same year. The latter was a common sight on that line until 1930, and in 1932, it was moved to Whitby.[2]

Another Diagram 96 railcar, No.37 Clydesdale, was used on the North Clyde Line from Glasgow Queen Street, until its withdrawal in 1945, replaced by a two-coach service hauled by an ex-NBR M/L class 4-4-2T (LNER C15/16 class).[3]

Accidents and incidents

On 9 June 1929, Diagram 89 railcar No.220 Waterwitch overran signals at Marshgate Junction in Doncaster, and broke into two sections when it collided with an excursion train. The railcar was damaged beyond repair, and was withdrawn from service.[4]
