Keith Stone (aka The Creature from Outer Bass)[1] is a Melbourne based contemporary singer/songwriter, musician and video artist who is widely known for his work as a bass player both solo and with many bands. As well as being in demand as a session bassist, Keith Stone has led and partnered several bands and music ventures over many years. Keith Stone gained notoriety as the founding member and bassist for Melbourne Fusion group ‘The Banned”, his appearances on Hey, Hey it’s Saturday, ABC’s Countdown (with Margaret Urlich)[2], many national and local radio performances, rave reviews in American Guitar Player magazine, and the Melbourne live scene . During early 2020, Keith Stone began concentrating on the self-production of his music from writing through to performance and arrangement of all music parts, recording and the production of accompanying music videos. He returned to the stage in late 2023 as a solo act under the performance name ‘The Creature from outer Bass’ to rave reviews.
Early Life edit
Keith Stone was born in Bridgend, Wales on the 6th of April 1960 and immigrated to Australia with his family in 1962, settling in Melbourne. Around 1973, Keith became interested in guitar when his brother (Michael) brought home a late 1950s Gibson Les Paul in the early 1970s.During early high school he met local drummer Peter Best. Together, they formed the band TARDIS with Peter Dadswell (circa 1974). TARDIS concentrated on Keith’s guitar based instrumental progressive rock compositions and were active for approximately three years touring around rural Victoria and New South Wales playing the pub scene.
After leaving TARDIS, Keith fell in love with fretless bass guitar after being introduced to Jaco Pastorius’s music at a friends house and immediately traded in his Gibson SG (and some cash) for a Maton fretless bass, the first one he had ever seen. This investment led him to founding the fusion group ‘The Banned’ with guitarist Wayne Monger and drummer Bill Wall during 1985. The Banned concentrated on instrumental fusion written by Stone and Monger. Keith and Bill appeared on the popular television show ‘Hey, Hey it’s Saturday’ in 1986 under the name ‘The Banned minus one’ on the popular gong segment. The appearance went very well and their audience grew exponentially afterwards. Popular radio station 3MMM[3] began including The Banned’s instrumental track ‘Technological Dyslexia’, produced and distributed by The Wheatley organisation[4], on their playlist. The Banned went through numerous lineup changes after Bill Wall left in 1987 but The Banned disbanded in 1989.
Keith began a solo writing career after the split writing, financing, producing, and distributing his first solo album ‘The Creature from Outer Bass’ in 1991 to rave reviews locally and internationally. Financially draining, the album was only played live on six occasions at Melbourne’s popular Grain Store and the project was forcibly shelved.
Keith also began getting session work in advertising and performed in many bands including Margaret Urlich (Countdown), session live work for international touring artists representative of the Armenian and Greek communities in Melbourne, tribute bands (The Rolling Stones, Eurythmics), and many cover bands. During 2010 Keith joined the world music group ‘Zap’ with founding member violinist Mykl Lozin and drummer Richard Walters for one album ‘Ascension’.
Keith decided to shift gear during 2011 and began to study for a psychological qualification gaining his degree and post graduate diplomas in psychology by 2019. 2020 brought Keith back to recording and producing music videos as a way of embracing the internet ‘self-publishing’ era with 45 music videos now available at his Youtube site.
By 2023, Keith was yearning to play live music again and began doing his ‘One man, one bass shows’ in inner Melbourne under the character name ‘The Creature from Outer Bass’. These shows are aimed at promoting the electric bass guitar to punters as a serious solo instrument not unlike any guitarist can enjoy but with a more exciting bottom end edge.
