Kansas Jayhawks women's rowing edit
Kansas Rowing is a Division I Women's Rowing team at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. The team is currently under Head Coach Carrie Cook-Callen and Associate Head Coach Guillermo Lemus Cabrera. The 2023-24 coaching staff also includes Dan Duxbury (Assistant Coach), Madison Hovis (Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator), Lauren Fee (Assistant Coach), and Miloš Aleksic (Assistant Coach). Additional Kansas Rowing staff in the 2023-24 academic year comprises of Boathouse Manager Bailey Blood, Assistant Athletic Trainer Sindra Scheuler (MEd, ATC, LAT), Assistant Athletic Trainer Emily Bromely (MS, ATC, LAT), Joe DeLeo (Jayhawk Athletic Performance Lab), Assistant Sports Performance Coach Ally Ginkens, and Assistant Sports Performance Coach Chuck Hollwedel.[1]

In 1995, women’s rowing was made an official varsity sport at the University of Kansas under the head-coaching of Rob Catloth. Kansas Rowing amalgamated with the Conference USA in 2009. In Kansas Rowing’s time as an official varsity sport, they have collected wins in six Big 12 championships, three conference USA championships, and two NCAA regionals.[2] KU boats also won national championships in 1994 and 2002.The team is currently under the Big 12 Conference as a Power 5 school, sharing in the long-time rivalry between The University of Kansas and Kansas State University[3].

The crew is currently located at the University of Kansas Boathouse off Burcham Park and the Kansas River. The home course for the crew contains a 5,000-meter stretch of water with an I-70 bridge mid-course. The team has hosted 4,000-meter home races, utilizing the Kansas River stretch, most notably the Jayhawk Jamboree, a fall head race.
Established in January 2009, The University of Kansas Boathouse is approximately 14,000 square feet. The boathouse is built with several boat bays that can host a total of 65 boat shells. The building is equipped with a 90-locker team locker room and a 50-locker public locker room. The Kansas Rowing Crew shares the boathouse with the Kansas Crew, a college co-ed rowing club also based in the University of Kansas. The facility also possesses a full kitchen and catering room, a multi-functional team room, and a second-level deck.[4]
Jayhawk Jamboree edit
The first annual Jayhawk Jamboree was hosted on October 20, 2013, as a revitalizer to the 19th century Western National Fair[5]. Prior to the 2013 Jamboree, the Kansas Rowing program had not hosted an official home event since 2005[6]. The Western National Fair first opened on September 13, 1880, at Bismark Grove along the Kansas River[7].The University of Kansas Boathouse now stands on the previous site of Bismark Grove. The Western National Fair, otherwise known as the Old Bismark Festival, included a rowing regatta. Jayhawk coaching staff created the Jayhawk Jamboree in memory of this past event. The Jayhawk Jamboree is a 4,000-meter head race with a time-trial formatting. Each boat is launched approximately 15 seconds apart and the boat with the fastest time wins the race.[8]
The Jayhawk Jamboree reached its largest peak in 2016, with twelve teams and 152 boats racing[9]. The event included the following varsity and club teams: the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Creighton University, University of Oklahoma, Wichita State University, University of Colorado, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Drake University, University of Iowa, University of Tulsa and the University of Central Oklahoma[10].
First Annual Jayhawk Jamboree (2013) edit
The first 2013 Jayhawk Jamboree included almost 2,000 spectators, the University of Kansas Band, a variety of vendors, and the KU mascot “Big Jay”.[11] Kansas Rowing competed against a multitude of teams- Kansas State, Central Oklahoma, Drake, and Tulsa. The racing event started at 1 p.m. and concluded at 5 p.m.[12] The event also welcomed club teams to compete in the Jamboree, like the Wichita State Crew team, and Kansas men’s crew and Kansas women’s crew teams.
