K. (Kenneth) Dane Brooksher (born February 8, 1939; died July 25, 2023) was an American business executive who helped build Prologis into the largest logistics real estate company in the world.

Early life and education

edit

Dane Brooksher was born and raised in Elsberry, Missouri, a small town in a rural county north of St. Louis. After graduating from high school there, Brooksher briefly attended the University of Missouri in Columbia before transferring to and graduating from the business school at the College of William & Mary. He married Carter Jean Stafford in 1958 (with whom Brooksher remained married until his death in 2023) and the couple raised three children.[1]

Career

edit

Peat Marwick (KPMG)

edit

After graduation from William & Mary, Brooksher joined the accounting firm of Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co., now known as KPMG, where he quickly rose through the ranks as partner and then in various managing positions. In his 32 years at KPMG, he served (among other roles) as Midwest (US) area Managing Partner and Chicago office Managing Partner, as well as a member of the firm's Board of Directors, Management Committee, and earlier served as the International Development Partner responsible for Belgium, The Netherlands, and Netherlands Antilles.[2]

ProLogis

edit

In 1993, Brooksher joined the recently-established Security Capital Industrial Trust (SCI) as its first chief operating officer, and the company became a public company a year later.[3] Brooksher led the company's expansion to Mexico.[3] He then directed the company's expansion into Europe, first to the Netherlands in 1997 and then to Paris, Stockholm, Brussels, Warsaw, London, Berlin, Milan, and Madrid.[2]

Brooksher continued to serve as chief operating officer as the company rebranded to ProLogis in 1998.[4] By that time, ProLogis was already active in 84 markets in 12 countries with a market capitalization of nearly $5 billion.[5] By late 1998, ProLogis became the "largest owner of industrial and warehouse properties in the United States."[6] In 1999, ProLogis elevated Brooksher to chief executive officer, where he served through 2004.[7][8] ProLogis joined the Fortune 1000 in 2006 while Brooksher was still chairman.[9]

Director on Corporate and Community Boards

edit

Mr. Brooksher held independent director positions on various private and public company boards, including Butler Manufacturing, Vizional Technologies, Inc., Pactiv, Cass Information Systems,[10] and Qwest.[11] He likewise served on the boards of the Northwestern University Kellogg School, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and as Midwest Chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee.[12] Brooksher was devoted to his alma mater, William and Mary, where he was both a Director and past Chairman of the Board of Sponsors. He was also Trustee Emeritus and past Treasurer of the William and Mary Endowment Association, a member of the President's Council and recipient of the 1991 Alumni Medallion.[2]
