Juan Felipe Waller edit

Juan Felipe Waller

Juan Felipe Waller (born March 30th, 1971[1]) is a Mexican-Dutch composer of contemporary classical music, and sound art. Waller’s music overlays atypical elements often revealing a surrealistic undertone. His music explores sonorities akin to electronic sounds created by acoustic means, either with classical instruments or by building his own, using ceramics, plastics and recyclable materials. Such is the case of Teguala for ceramic tiles and electronic playback, where four percussionists play on Mexican tiles with a wide variety of mallets ranging from needles to drumsticks. The incorporation of ceramics in this composition is influenced by the historical utilization of ceramics in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican pottery, a tradition that extended to the crafting of musical instruments.. [2]

Biography edit

Waller studied at the Musical Studies and Research Centre (CIEM, México), at the Rotterdam Conservatory (Codarts) composition under Klaas de Vries, Peter-Jan Wagemans and René Uijlenhoet, graduating cum laude, and following up his studies at IRCAM in Paris [3][4]

Juan Felipe Waller is recipient of several prizes and grants, including NOG 1st prize Jonge Componisten Concours for his orchestral work Calumnia (1999, NL)[5], Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte (MX), Camargo Foundation Residency (2006 FR)[6].
