Passionate about nature and photography since the early stages of his life, he took his BSc. degree in Biological Sciences at State University of Campinas in 2003[1].

He took his Master's degree in Ecology at the same institution in 2005, studying the biology of reef fishes at Fernando de Noronha archipelago, off North-eastern Brazil, under the supervision of Prof. Ivan Sazima[29].

João Paulo also obtained a PhD in Ecology at State University of Campinas, with an one-year internship at James Cook University, studying the ecological feeding of reef fishes in Brazil and Australia, under the supervision of Prof. Fosca Pedini Pereira Leite, and co-supervision of Prof. Sergio R.
