Jerusalem Demsas is an American journalist covering policy, particularly housing policy and economics. She is a staff writer at The Atlantic.

Early life and education

Demsas immigrated to the United States as a three year old with her parents, who were Eritrean refugees fleeing the Ethiopian Civil War.[1] She studied economics and government at the College of William & Mary.[2]

Career

Demsas covered energy and environmental issues at the Center for American Progress.[2] She was a policy reporter at Vox until 2022,[3] covering housing, urban economics, and domestic policy. At Vox, Demsas cohosted The Weeds, a biweekly politics and policy podcast.[2]

Demsas has been at The Atlantic since 2022,[4] where she hosts a policy podcast, Good on Paper.[5] In 2024, she published her first book, On the Housing Crisis: Land, Development, Democracy, an anthology of her essays on the housing shortage.[6]
