Jānis Kalējs (born 1st of May 1948) is an opera singer, tenor. Since 1963 he studied at the wind instrument faculty of Jelgava Music School, later he enrolled in Jāzeps Vītols Latvian State Conservatory, in the singing class of professor A. Viļumāns. From 1974 he continued his studies at the Rimsky-Korsakov Leningrad State Conservatory, in the vocal class of professor N. Servale. From 1979 to 1993 J. Kalējs was a soloist at the Latvian National Opera, sang first and second plan roles, and collaborated with such principal accompanists as L. Holbergs and I. Villers, composer, R. Jermak. Jānis gave concerts in Latvia, and Lithuania, participated in concerts of sacred music in Germany, and F. Chaliapin’s International Opera Festival in Kazan. He currently works as a vocal consultant and teacher.
