Development edit

In May 2017, Sony Pictures officially announced plans for a new shared universe,[1] Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU),[2] featuring Spider-Man-related properties beginning with Venom in October 2018.[1] In August 2018, Sony was revealed to be developing a film featuring the character Jackpot, and were actively looking for a writer for the project. Discussion of the film noted that the character is an older woman, likely to be portrayed as being in her mid-forties, which is rare for the youth-focused superhero genre; Sony wanted to promote diversity among the lead characters of its shared universe.[3] Marc Guggenheim, a writer on the Jackpot comic books as well as the Arrowverse superhero television franchise, was revealed to be writing the screenplay for Jackpot in May 2020,[4] though he stated that he had been working on the film for two years already by that point.[5] Shortly after his involvement was revealed, Guggenheim made his directorial debut with the Legends of Tomorrow episode "The One Where We're Trapped on TV". While discussing that episode, he was asked whether he would be interested in directing Jackpot as well as writing it, but Guggenheim felt he was not yet ready to direct a big-budget feature film.[6]
