Jack Hibbs is an American evangelical Christian pastor and author. He is the founder and senior pastor of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills in Chino Hills, California.
Early life and education
editJack Hibbs was born in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in a non-religious household and did not come to Christianity until later in life. After high school, he attended Biola University where he earned a Bachelor's degree.
Ministry career
editAfter graduating from Biola, Hibbs became a youth pastor at Calvary Chapel in Yorba Linda, California. He served in that role from 1987 to 1999. In 1999, he founded Calvary Chapel Chino Hills in Chino Hills, California and became the senior pastor of the new church plant. Under Hibbs' leadership, Calvary Chapel Chino Hills grew rapidly from a small congregation to over 8,000 members as of 2022. The church holds four services each Sunday to accommodate its large attendance.
Hibbs is known for his conservative theological views and outspoken political commentary from a conservative Christian perspective. He has been critical of liberal policy positions on issues like abortion and LGBTQ rights. His sermons often address cultural and political topics in addition to biblical teaching. He has authored several books including Prayers That Crash Heaven's Gates, Waging Winning Spiritual Warfare, and The Blessing of Obedience. His radio program, The Call To Win, airs on over 300 stations across the United States.
Controversy
editHibbs has faced criticism from some for his conservative stances on social issues. In 2021, he drew backlash for referring to the showing of LGBTQ Pride flags at churches as "spiritual blindness." He is Pro-Life.
His church's stance against COVID-19 restrictions like mask and vaccine mandates also brought criticism during the pandemic. Calvary Chapel Chino Hills was one of the few churches in California to defy state restrictions and continue holding large indoor services.
