IRL streaming is a form of live streaming, similar to a vlog, where the streamer in question documents their daily life.[1][2]

The earliest attempt of IRL streaming dates back to the launch of Justin.tv in 2007. One of the founders, Emmett Shear, had originally created the website to live stream the life of his Yale University roommate, Justin Kan.[2] However, the website had trouble gaining internet traffic until they allowed viewers to live stream on their own.[2] Justin.tv would later rebrand to Twitch in 2011.[3][2] Twitch would later add an "IRL" category for live streams unrelated to gaming in 2016. It was split in to several other categories in late 2018.[4][5] Just Chatting, a Twitch category featuring live streams where the streamer talks to the audience, was created as a result of the split. It has been the most popular Twitch category since May 2020.[5]
