Identity

Hendog is a Hampshire-based street artist, whose identity remains anonymous... Frequently described as Hampshire's answer to Banksy, however, the speculations of the similarities between the two artists have no connection to each other, other than their use of stencilling techniques . His artworks are predominantly displayed in and around the streets of the South of England, where it was speculated he was from. The artist later confirmed in an interview in 2023 that he resides in Winchester, Hampshire. . His murals usually depict children, with a focus on 'youth, innocence and nostalgia' , however, the artist introduced a series of a teddy bear, named 'Lost Bear' in 2022 on Chapel Street, Guildford , with later instalments of the series being viewed throughout the South of England, including Winchester , Camberley , Old Basing , Andover and Petersfield .

Hendog's first mural installation appeared on the 14th March, 2021. Described as a 'Mother's Day gift' by the artist. The mural was found under the bridge of The Handlebar Café near the popular destination of St Catherine's Hill depicting a boy flying a kite . The response from the public was immensely positive, as they speculated the identity of the artist behind the mural. . Since his first mural installation, Hendog's street murals have gained international recognition by the BBC in May of 2021, for his NHS mural tribute during the COVID-19 pandemic , and again in February of 2023, for his two installations in Dover, commenting on the Ukrainian refugee crisis . More recently, Hendog completed his first Radio interview for BBC Sounds in March of 2024, where the artist contributed his opinions in topics relating to 'Street Art' and 'Wellbeing'.

Hendog's works have commented on a number of political and social themes including suicide prevention, anti-consumerism, inflation, refugee crises and child labour practices displayed in cobalt mines in the Congo. Whilst relying on his imagery of nostalgic, vintage imagery of children.

Activism

Among political and social themes, Hendog has previously worked alongside charities supporting mental heath, community food pantries , and dementia care . More notably working with the NHS at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester and the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital within the Maternity Department . Hendog has also worked in tandem with Winchester County Council to promote 'free walls' for young artists, granting anyone the permission to paint these safe spaces .

·"Everyone Deserves The Chance to Eat" (March 2021), Unit 12 Food Pantry, Winchester, Hampshire . Hendog created a mural of a boy holding a sandwich, in aid of a non-profit food pantry aiming to help those in need of resources.

·"Bubble Boy" (March 2021), Eastleigh, Hampshire . Later vandalised and destroyed in October 2021 .

·In April 2021 Hendog painted a mural for the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester, Hampshire depicting a child handing an NHS nurse in PPE a bunch of flowers in light of the pandemic .

·"Tomorrow's Problems" (April, 2021), Lee-on-Solent, Hampshire . Hendog painted a boy in a yellow raincoat and boots pulling an anchor on a beach kiosk.

·In May 2021, Hendog created an unfinished piece for Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, for International Nurse's Day , leaving a large area blank for members of the public to add their messages to key workers, as Hendog commenting on 'their hard work and sacrifice, [impacting] our road back to normality'.

·"Crayola Boy" (July 2021), Unit 12, Winchester, Hampshire. Hendog worked alongside Winchester County Council to create 'free walls' for those who wish to express themselves in a safe and legal setting, depicting a boy drawing the words 'These Walls Are Free' across the span of four walls

·"Puddle Boy" (August 2021), Winchester, Hampshire .

·"Smile" (August 2021), Salisbury, Wiltshire . Hendog's first mural outside of Hampshire county was a depiction of a girl holding a camera, smiling .

·"Don't Hate The Game Changer" (November 2021), Hengistbury Head, Dorset . In November 2021, Hendog ventured to the coastguard look-out station, painting a child fishing in a fishbowl .

·"Christmas Kev" (December 2021), Winchester Bus Station, Hampshire . Hendog created a mural of a Big Issue magazine seller for those who are fighting homelessness, or vulnerably housed.

·"Lost Bear Vol.1" (August 2022), Guildford, Surrey . A mural depicting a girl dropping a teddy bear.

·"Chapter 1, We're Going on a Bear Hunt" (October 2022), Winchester Hampshire . In October 2022, Hendog painted on the derelict gates of a former coal merchant, creating the first of many 'chapters' in a series of images of a teddy bear. This particular image was of the bear carrying a bindle.

·"Chapter 2, The Long Night" (November 2022), Winchester Hampshire . The third instalment of the Teddy Bear, appearing under a blanket and next to a campfire.

·"Chapter 3, Lost Girl" (December 2022), Camberley, Surrey . Hendog paints a girl putting up missing posters, saying 'Have You Seen My Bear?' .

Trapped Between Boarders, Dover Port, Kent

·"Trapped Between Boarders" (January 2023), Dover Port, Dover, Kent. Notably Hendog's first mural in the South East, and the first time that the street artist painted two murals in the same sitting. . Painted to reflect on the Ukrainian refugee crisis .

·"Chapter 4, Washed Up" (February 2023), Old Basing, Hampshire . Another instalment in the Lost Bear series.

·"Chapter 5, We're Not That Different" (March 2023), Winchester. Hampshire .

·"Take Your Pet To School Day" (June 2023), Winchester, Hampshire . Hendog painted a mural depicting a child 'walking a fish' on a lead, among childish crayon-like drawings.

Chapter 6, Power, Drunk (comma or no comma), Andover, Hampshire

·"Chapter 6, Power, Drunk (comma or no comma)" (July 2023), Andover, Hampshire . An instalment in the Lost Bear series featuring a police man seemingly chasing the bear, who is holding bottles of alcohol.

·"Beauty's in The Eye of The Holder" (August 2023), Chichester, West Sussex . Hendog left his first mark in the county of West Sussex, leaving behind a mural of a girl holding a bunch of flowers.

·"We'll Just Start Again" (October 2023), Winchester, Hampshire . In 2023, Hendog left the walls of cities behind, and instead took to painting an old fallen down tree in the forests of Hampshire. The street artist painted a young child with a watering can aimed at the grass below.

·"Chapter 7, Public Intoxication" (November 2023), Petersfield, Hampshire . Hendog painted the bear again, this time with the caption beside the mural displaying the words: 'What Are You Looking At?'.

·"Boys With Kite" (November 2023), St Catherine's Hill, Winchester, Hampshire . More than two years after his debut, "Boy With Kite", Hendog took to the exact same location and reimagined the mural with a similar concept, this time with two boys flying a kite together.

·"Chained To A Daisy" (February 2024), Bishops Waltham, Hampshire . This mural found on a bus shelter was a painting of a girl making a daisy chain. Vandalised in March 2024 with a cross and the word 'Toy' written next to it, a derogatory phrase among street artists . Later restored by the artist and protected by the council .

Bapsybanoo, Cabinet Rooms, Winchester, Hampshire

·"Bapsybanoo" (April 2024), Cabinet Rooms, Winchester, Hampshire . In early 2024, Hendog painted a mural of the Marchioness of Winchester, Bapsybanoo Pavry (1902-1995), the only Indian Marchioness in history. She is honoured in the Winchester Guildhall, after she bequeathed £600,000 to the Winchester community upon her death .

·"Crime and Punishment" (July 2024), Proteus Creation Space, Basingstoke, Hampshire . Previously a school, the building is now an arts theatre. Hendog painted a mural on the wall of a girl writing lines on a chalkboard reading 'I Promise To Stop Painting On Walls', surrounded by depictions of other famous street artists such as Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and 'The Simpson's' own Bart Simpson.
