Haru Oni
editHaru Oni is a demonstration facility that produces carbon-neutral eFuels with the winds of Patagonia, located 40 km north of Punta Arenas. It is the first integrated plant of its kind in the world and the owner and developer is HIF Global.[1]
These eFuels will seek to replace fossil fuels without requiring changes to existing engines, storage, and distribution systems[2].
Status[3]
- The plant is currently operating and producing eFuels.
- Major construction work began in September 2021, and the first liters of synthetic fuels were produced in December 2022. HIF Haru Oni employed 250 people during construction and is now operated by 22 people. The Operations and Maintenance team is 100% local.
- In October 2023, they announced the world’s first production of carbon-neutral liquefied gas (eLG) generated with renewable energy. This gas is captured in the Methanol to Gasoline conversion.
- Shipment of the first commercial export to United Kingdom in October 2023 (24,600 liters of eFuels).
How it works[4]
- With power generated from wind they obtain hydrogen from water through a process called electrolysis.
- Then, the hydrogen obtained from the electrolysis with the CO2 (captured from a biogenic source) is combined through a synthesis process obtaining eMethanol.
- The eMethanol, eGasoline and eLiquefiedGas (eLG) produced can be used in current infrastructure without any modifications required.
- Some of the plant’s equipment are the Silyzer 200 electrolyzer; the Siemens Gamesa 3.4 MW wind turbine that provides renewable energy for the electrolysis process; and the MtG (Methanol to Gasoline) technology, among others.
