Green Film Shooting is a website that provides information about eco-friendly measures for saving resources on film and media productions[1]. It covers ecological approaches, innovations, and best practices in regards to the entire production and distribution chain as well as theatrical release, digital platforms and festivals[2].
It also provides an overview of initiatives, organizations, and film fundings which support sustainable film and media production.
Print Version edit
The annual print version, the Green Film Shooting Magazine, is launched at the Berlin International Film Festival. Additional publications include special editions on COP 21 [3], the CineRegio Green Reports [4], as well as master’s theses on green film production by graduate students .
Publisher edit
Green Film Shooting was launched in 2012 by political scientist and film journalist Birgit Heidsiek, granddaughter of the German resistance fighter Wilhelm Heidsiek. As the Green Cinema Consultant of the German Federal Film Board (FFA) since 2017,[5], she operates the Green Cinema website[6] and is the writer/producer of the Green Cinema Handbook.
Furthermore, she lectures at film schools, hosts workshops and conferences in Germany [7] as well as abroad [8], and held a TEDx Talk [9] on green film production in 2020.
Guest authors of Green Film Shooting include German trade journalist Bernd Jetschin, Belgian sustainability expert Tim Wagendorp, sustainability consultant Katja Schwarz[10], and producer and green consultant Fabian Linder.
Content edit
It provides green approaches to the energy- and resource-intensive world of film and media production [11], and it embraces various sectors, including energy, transportation and mobility, IT and data center, waste management, energy efficiency of buildings, set design, catering, costumes, and make-up[12].
Partnerships edit
In order to introduce the international film and media industry to eco-responsibility, Green Film Shooting also hosts events at the Berlin and Cannes International Film Festivals [13] in collaboration with German and international film funds, the Berlinale, the German Federal Environment Ministry, the Minister of Culture and the Media as well as with NGOs, such as the Sielmann Foundation [14].
Certifications and Awards edit
Green Film Shooting received a certification by the Hamburg-based EcoProfit operation in 2019. By implementing this environmental management system, Green Film Shooting enhanced its life cycle assessment by saving resources and procuring eco-friendly materials. In order to keep its carbon footprint as low as possible, the Green Film Shooting website has been hosted since its inception by a data center powered by renewable energy. Green Film Shooting Magazine is certified as print product by the Blue Angel eco-label.
The Council for Sustainable Development (RNE) and the Regional Hubs for Sustainability Strategies (RENN) honored Green Film Shooting for “Project Sustainability 2019.” The RNE and the RENN also awarded Green Film Shooting the top prize for “Transformation Project Sustainability” in 2019 [15]. The prize is an apple tree, which was planted in 2020. The German Environmental Management Association B.A.U.M. provided Green Film Shooting with a certificate for the “Office & Environment” competition in 2019. In 2020, Green Film Shooting was short-listed for the inaugural Makers and Shakers Sustainability Award, which is given out by the British industry initiative, Focus[16].
