Draft:Gradel Institute of Charity

The Gradel Institute of Charity is a research institute based at New College, Oxford which focuses on the governance and strategic leadership of charitable organisations. It was established in 2023, and is led by Stephen Bubb and Peter Frumkin.[1]

History edit

The Institute was first announced in 2019, after the previous organisation led by Stephen Bubb, Charity Futures, announced a collaboration with New College, Oxford. When the plan was announced, The Times reported that the Institute was inspired by scandal surrounding the Kids Company in 2015.[2] Bubb accompanied the launch by declaring that "most of the current institutes, there are quite a few in America, focus on they concentrate on giving, philanthropy ... whereas our focus is absolutely on how you run a charity."[3] Bubb had previously been the chief executive of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations until 2017.

The Institute was officially launched in September 2023, with Peter Frumkin as Academic Director, on leave of absence from the University of Pennsylvania. In April 2024 the Institute announced the appointment of its worldwide group of Associate Fellows.

Location edit

The Gradel Institute is based at the tower of the Gradel Quadrangles on Savile Road, a project developed by New College, Oxford and funded by the alumnus and financier Chris Gradel, co-founder of PAG (investment firm).[4]
