Global Action on Men's Health (GAMH) is an international non-governmental organisation (NGO) founded in 2013 with a mission to create a world where all men and boys have the opportunity to achieve the best possible health and wellbeing wherever they live and whatever their backgrounds.

AIMS

GAMH was established because many men suffer from preventable health and wellbeing issues . For instance, the global average male life expectancy is just 71 years. Despite this, poor male health is often unrecognised and unaddressed by global organisations and national governments.

GAMH aims to:

Advocate for global health organisations and national governments to address the health and wellbeing needs of men and boys in all relevant policies.
Encourage and support men and boys to take better care of their own health as well as the health of their partners and children.
Urge health practitioners to consider the specific needs of men and boys in service delivery, health promotion and clinical practice.
Raise awareness among other agencies and organisations, such as schools and workplaces, about their significant impact on the health of men and boys.
Promote sustained multi-disciplinary research into the health of men and boys.
Support an approach to health that fully recognises the needs of both sexes in policy, practice and funding and promotes greater gender equality.

DISTINCT ROLE

GAMH's role is distinct from other international men's health organisations because it:

Uniquely represents a wide range of men's health and related organisations with experience of policy development, advocacy, research and service delivery.
Addresses a broad and cross-cutting range of men's health issues including health literacy, risk-taking behaviours, and use of services.
Primarily focuses on public health policy and the social determinants of health.
Maintains a strengths-based view of men and boys, acknowledging their unique contributions to society while holding them accountable for unacceptable behaviours, including gender-based violence.
Is committed to working in partnership with other organisations rather than in competition with them.
Supports a health approach that considerssex and gender to improve the health of both men and women without reallocating resources from women's health to men's health.

GOVERNANCE

GAMH is based in London and registered as a charity in England and Wales with the status of a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO). Its Board of Trustees, usually comprising 8- 10 members, is drawn from its member organisations. As of 2024, the chair is Professor Derek M. Griffith, Founder and Director of the Center for Men's Health Equity and a Founding Co-Director of the Racial Justice Institute at Georgetown University in Washington DC (USA). The director is Peter Baker FRSPH FRSA, former Chief Executive of the Men's Health Forum (Great Britain) and Campaign Director of HPV Action (UK). Since 2019, he has also provided consultancy support on HPV issues to the European Cancer Organisation (ECO) and he is co-chair of ECO's Men and Cancer Workstream.

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW

In the 2022/23 financial year, the organisation's total gross income was GBP 147.80k, up from GBP 23.1k in 2021/22, GBP 37.44k in 2020/21 and GBP 35.86k in 2019/20.

GAMH has produced several reports focusing on men's health issues providing an evidence base for its advocacy work. These reports include:

GAMH also runs an active webinar programme with recordings available through its YouTube channel.^[5] The organisation publishes a monthly news bulletin^[6] and posts regularly on X (@Globalmenhealth).^[7] GAMH's official journal, the International Journal of Men's Social and Community Health,^[8] is published twice-yearly by the University of Toronto Press with Derek M.Griffith as Editor-in-Chief from 2024.

COLLABORATIONS

GAMH has collaboration agreements with the European Cancer Organisation and NOMAN is an Island: Race to End HPV.^[9] It has worked with WHO Europe,^[10] WHO Western Pacific^[11] and PAHO/WHO (Pan American Health Organisation)^[12] and served as a consultant to Ireland's Health Service Executive and Movember.
