Dr. George Anthony Giannoumis (Dr. Philos) (born 1979) is a Norwegian-American researcher and associate professor at Kristiania University College.[1]. He is also the co-founder and CEO of Inclusive Creation [2], an IT consultancy firm based in Norway.

His main research interests include universal design of information and communication technology, universal e-accessibility, technology law, sustainable development, and inclusive leadership. Dr. Giannoumis is known for his engaging and influential keynote speeches on inclusive leadership[3]

Giannoumis holds a master's degree in Global Health from Temple University in Philadelphia. The title of his master's thesis was "A Systematic Review of the Unintended Effects of Legislation on Population Health". Additionally, Giannoumis holds a doctoral degree in comparative European and international law from the University of Bergen. The topic of his doctoral dissertation was "Implementing Web Accessibility Policy: A comparative case study of the United Kingdom, Norway and the United States."[4]

Giannoumis has previously worked as a research assistant at the Guru Charitable Foundation and as a visiting researcher at the Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University. In 2011, Giannoumis was awarded a scholarship from the EU's Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) program.[5] The scholarship led him to the Velferdsforskningsinstituttet NOVA, where he conducted research on monitoring, implementation, and enforcement of laws and policies related to unviersal e-accessibility.[6] In 2014, he was appointed as an associate professor at the Department of Information Technology at OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University.[5]

Giannoumis has also been a visiting researcher and guest lecturer at the National University of Ireland, Galway, Maynooth University, Communication University of China, Sapienza-universitetet and University of Padua.[5] Additionally, he has participated in the Mozambique Norway Accessibility Project (MAP) - a collaborative project between Oslo Metropolitan University and Eduardo Mondlane University, aimed at enhancing research collaboration and student exchange in the areas of universal design and ICT accessibility.[7]

Giannoumis is the deputy rapporteur for the United Nations agency, the International Telecommunication Union, won matters concering technology accessibility and digital equality.[8] He is also a member of the subcommittee in the organization EQUALS Global Partnership for Gender Equality in the Digital Age[9] and the think tank MyGoverNext Oslo. He is also a board member of the student organization Gender Equality in Technology. Giannoumis has previously been a member of the Association for Computing Machinerys (ACM) expert panel on diversity and inclusion.

Research Projects edit

Giannoumis has participated in several major research projects. Among them are two EU-funded projects:

  • DISCIT - making persons with disabilities full citizens. The purpose of the project was to gather new knowledge to enable the EU, its member states, and associated countries to achieve full economic and social participation of persons with disabilities.[10] Giannoumis participated as a researcher and served as the project's communications manager. The project was completed in 2016.
  • Cloud4All. A project aimed at developing technological infrastructure for automatic personalization of products and services for all types of devices and platforms, for individuals with disabilities. [11] Giannoumis participated as an ethical and legal advisor.

Giannoumis' more recent research projects include:

  • Democratic Urban Development in the Digital Age - DEMUDIG. The research project investigate how the use of digital platforms promotes participatory democracy by comparing urban development processes in Oslo, Madrid, and Melbourne. The project was concluded in December 2021.[12]
  • RELINK - Research to relink the ‘weak link’ in the digital chain. Exploration, intervention, and co-created solutions for building resilient digital households. The research project aims to map digital vulnerabilities in today's households and develop tools and solutions to make future connected homes more resilient to digital vulnerabilities. The project concluded in July 2023.[13]
