Fred Fariborz Farshad (born 1 March 1946) is an Iranian-American Educator. He was a Chevron-Texaco Endowed Research Professor in the Dept. of Petroleum and Chemical Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He was the recipient of the university’s 1999 Outstanding Faculty Award for teaching and has over 40 years of experience in teaching, research, publications, and consulting in petrochemical industry, onshore and offshore.[1]

His area of expertise include production engineering, reservoir engineering, Natural Gas Engineering, corrosion engineering, simulation and modeling, thermodynamics and transport phenomena with specialty in internal pipeline corrosion, production modeling and simulation.

Previously, Farshad worked for Cities Services Oil Company and Core Laboratories. He holds a PhD degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Oklahoma. He is a member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Society of Petroleum Engineers, National Association of Corrosion Engineers, National Association of Gas Engineers, The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society, Epsilon Tau Pi (Petroleum Engineering honor society), Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society), and Sigma Ta (Engineering Honor Society). He has served on numerous SPE technical committees. Farshad has authored more than 75 technical papers and has lectured and conducted short courses worldwide. He holds two US patents.[2][3]

Life

Fred Fariborz Farshad was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1946, the fifth child of Dr. Feridoun Farshad and Nahid Merat (Meratolmamalek). He is of Persian (Ashtiani-Tafreshi) ancestry through his father and his mother. Dr. Feridoun Farshad was a Sorbonne University graduate with a Doctoral Degree in Geology. He was a faculty member at the University of Tehran and served as: Vice Chancellor, Dean of the College of Science, and Head of the Geology Department. In addition, Dr. Professor Fereydoun Farshad served in the position of Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr. Hasabi, in Dr. Mosadegh's Cabinet.

He also was a local politician who was one the original group of the Sorbonne University Graduates that had arrived from France and established and laid the foundation and established the Department of Geology at the University of Tehran. His Fossil’s collection (worldwide) is permanent part of the Department of Geology at UT.  He was the recipient of the prestige France’s Ordre des Palmes Académiques for distinguished work in the world of academic, culture and education.

After Graduating from high school (Firouz Bahram), Fred attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman Oklahoma. Over the next five or six years, while attending the university he worked as a window washer, swimming pool maintenance worker, waiter, bartender, Oklahoma Football Memorial Stadium’s concession worker, Goodyear Tire Company, Chicago Magnet Wire Corp and graduate teaching assistant at the University of Oklahoma.

After receiving his MS degree and while pursuing his PhD degree he was employed by Cities Service Oil Company as a senior Petroleum Engineer in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and worked in Oklahoma Panhandle, West Texas, and Eastern Kansas. Later, he joined Core Laboratory Inc. as a senior international petroleum consultant in Dallas Texas. In the fall 1976, he became an associate professor of petroleum engineering in the Department of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Louisiana.[4]

Making his way as an educator and professional consultant, Dr. Professor Farshad traveled the country and the world, sometimes with his family, sometimes not. While teaching short courses and consulting he visited Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Trinidad and Tobago, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates (Dubai, Abu Dhabi), Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonasia (Balikpapan). He has also visited Bahamas, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, the British Isles, France, England, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand in addition to Alaska.

Professor Farshad lives in Laguna Niguel with his wife, Heidi Taghinejad. His two children, Lauren and Jeffrey, and three grandchildren live in New Orleans.

Work

Dr. Professor Farshad holds BS, MS. and Ph.D. degrees all in petroleum engineering from the University of Oklahoma [5]. He spent 4 years at the University of Oklahoma, arranging to carry out his research in the area of computer modeling of Total Optimization of Production System under direction of the late Professor Paul Root. This research experience, which he found most rewarding, set up the basis for his long and close association with the subject of hydrodynamics of fluid flow in pipes. He established and set up the Pipe Surface Roughness Testing, Fluid Flow, and Flow Assurance laboratory facility at the University of Louisiana and he is renowned throughout the world as the originator of the research on surface roughness of newly developed pipes using profiling instruments.

As a research professor and graduate student advisor, he supervised over hundreds of MS. Thesis over 32 years of service at the University of Louisiana.[6]

In addition to teaching, research, and scholarly publication, he had success in short course teaching and consulting in Petro/Chemical Engineering. As a member of Society of Petroleum Engineers he wrote and edited many technical papers. He has been a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers for over 40 years and he has served on many SPE Technical Committees.

Awards

For his scholarly research as engineering faculty member at The University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Farshad received prestigious award from the North American Chapter of the Russian Academy of Natural Science.  Professor Fred F. Farshad received the Crown and Eagle Medals of Honor. He was also inducted into the membership of the Academy’s North American Chapter.

For his dedication in higher education, the University of Louisiana has established the LaHaye, Farshad, Reiki scholarship in the college of Engineering at the University of Louisiana.[7]

In addition, Farshad was the Endowed Chevron-Texaco professor in Chemical Engineering and was a member of the University’s Energy Institute. He is noted for his cumulative research expertise on surface roughness characterization of newly developed internally plastic coated pipes used in the petroleum industry. His research showed that there is significant increase in production rates when using “smooth” pipes.  This is in addition to the cost reduction when transporting oil and gas in pipelines. As a result of the research he has developed a surface roughness correlation for modern pipes and oil country tubular goods (OCTG). Dr. Professor Fred Farshad has worked with some of the finest universities and organizations such as The University of Oklahoma, the University of Louisiana, the City Service Oil Company, and the Core Laboratories Inc. Research Corporation.
