Production edit

The film was shot over several years in Bundaberg, Queensland, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. Collaborating with culturally maligned and working-class communities to explore the deep history of exploitation and grief that has inscribed itself into the cultivated landscapes of regional Australia.

Documenting the personal memories, real life events of leads Cass Cumerford and Andrew Wong, while also creating fictionalised scenarios where their emotional truths could thrive. Allowing the film to capture intimate moments and interactions that dealt with addiction, race, faith, masculinity, grief and the forces that connect us.

Director Jaydon Martin and cinematographer Brodie Poole built a distinct monochrome visual language that stripped everything back to the rawest elements. Producer and editor Patrick McCabe worked closely with Martin to edit the film during production to help guide filming and build a strong thematic tone[3]

Critical Reception edit

Peter Bradshaw reviewing for The Guardian rated the film with 4 stars out of 5 and wrote "Jaydon Martin makes an outstanding feature debut with this absorbing, moving and visually beautiful docufiction." Bradshaw went on to describe "The film’s poetry resides in its thoughtful inactivity, its vernacular spirituality and its gentleness."[4] Wendy Ide writing for ScreenDaily said "The film is an unvarnished, but striking account of life in this working class community." [5]Shane Danielsen writing in The Monthly described the film as "Elegant, patient and humane…". Carmen Gray wrote in the Sight and Sound's Weekly Film Bulletin about the film ‘The docufiction, with its distinctive vision of spiritual questing in a poor part of Queensland, maximised absurdist detail and laidback sardonic wit while still conferring dignity on its subjects…’.[6]

Awards & Accolades edit

Flathead won the Tiger Competition Special Jury Award at the 53rd International Film Festival Rotterdam, with Variety reporting the Jury's comments on the film: “calm but touching execution”, and a “naturalistic and realistic film at its best.”[7]
