FX Harsono (Chinese: 胡丰文; pinyin: Oh Hong Boen) is an Indonesian artist of Chinese descent born 22 March, 1949, in Blitar, East Java.[1]
Early life
editHarsono's work is partially influenced by photographs he discovered that were taken by his father, Oh Hok Tjoe, who later went by Hendro Subagjo.
Hendro Subagjo was a photographer in Blitar and owned the photography studio "Atom". Subagjo's photographs were largely related to the Chung Hwa Hui organisation, documenting the exhumation and recording of the mass killings against the Chinese communities in Java in 1951. Harsono kept albums of these photographs that documented this time period, and used them later on in his works as well, such as in Memelihara Hidup, Menghentikan Hidup #1 (Preserving Life, Terminating Life #1).[2]
Education
editFrom 1969, Harsono studied painting at the Indonesian Arts Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. At the time, young artists in Yogyakarta and Bandung began to challenge the "aesthetic and theoretical conventions of modern art largely defined by painting and sculpture". Students at ASRI, such as Harsono, criticised the school administration which culminated in the "Black December Affair" of 1974. They criticised the jury at the Grand Exhibition of Indonesian Painting for their conservatism and favouritism, sending them flowers on the last night of the Grand Exhibition with a ribbon attached that read "Ibut berduka cita atas kematian seni lukis kita" (condolences on the death of Indonesian painting).[3]
Harsono was later suspended from ASRI and moved his studies to Jakarta Institute of the Arts (IKJ). While in Jakarta, he also founded the Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru (GSRB), or New Art Movement.[4]

editPilgrimage to History, 2010-2017
editIn 1951, Chung Hua Tsung Hui, a Chinese community organization, formed a team to locate and properly bury the bodies of murdered Chinese individuals. Harsono's father, a photographer, documented this work. Using his photos, Harsono investigated the genocide by surveying villages where the victims were found. This research led to a solo exhibition, "The Erased Time," in 2009 at the Indonesia National Gallery. Later, he received a document (MEMORANDUM, Outlining Acts of Violence and Humanity Perpetrated by Indonesian Bands on Innocent Chinese Before and After The Dutch Police Action Was Enforced on July 21, 1947) detailing violence against Chinese people from 1947 to 1949. He expanded his research to other cities with mass graves, gathering data and interviewing witnesses, which took considerable time.
Rewriting the Erased
editAfter 1966, due to a government directive, Harsono was required to change his Chinese name to an Indonesian one, as all Chinese-Indonesian citizens were pressured to do so. This policy aimed to erase Chinese identity, promoting the idea that only "real" Indonesians, with Indonesian names, were good and patriotic. This social and political pressure led many Chinese-Indonesians to hide their true identities. In his project "Memory of A Name," Harsono aimed to honestly reflect on this history, emphasising that acknowledging our past doesn't negate our nationalism but connects our cultural roots to our future, celebrating diversity as a strength.[5]
