About edit
EGPRN, an integral network entity under WONCA Europe[1], is the European General Practice Research Network (formerly EGPRW, European General Practice Research Workshop). Comprising general practitioners/family physicians and various healthcare professionals dedicated to primary care and family medicine research, the organization is committed to creating an optimal environment for the discussion and advancement of primary care research[2]. Its objectives include facilitating and coordinating multinational studies, sharing experiences, and establishing a validated scientific foundation for general practice. Furthermore, EGPRN provides a platform for general practitioners to connect with international counterparts, fostering local and global research collaborations.
History edit
The European General Practice Research Network (EGPRN) originated from the European General Practice Research Workshop (EGPRW), an informal group formed in the early years of European academic general practice research[3]. Transitioning from an ill-defined entity, EGPRW evolved into EGPRN after a pivotal meeting in Leusden, the Netherlands, in October 1971.
EGPRN's early focus was on identifying real problems in general practice and establishing rules for systematic inquiry. Over time, it became a platform for international collaboration, leading to significant studies such as the European Study of Referrals from Primary to Secondary Care.
The network's evolution reflects a commitment to evidence-based general practice, addressing challenges like the denominator problem and contributing to methodological advancements. Recognized in 1995 as a key organization within the European Society of General Practice/Family Medicine (WONCA Europe), EGPRN continues to collaborate with global research networks, furthering research capacity in family medicine.
Activities edit
Beyond providing a platform for collaborative projects, EGPRN also hosts bi-annual scientific conferences[4] in different cities all over Europe for General Practice researchers to present their findings. Abstracts from these conferences are published as proceedings with an ISBN number.
EGPRN has published the Research Agenda for General Practice / Family Medicine and Primary Health Care in Europe in 2019[5] and the Research Strategy for General Practice in Europe in 2021[6] ISBN 9789082967388
