Ember Choral Arts.[1] based in New York and New Jersey. Since its establishment in 1995, Ember Choral Arts, formerly known as Schola Cantorum on Hudson[2][3], has evolved significantly both in depth and influence. This semi-professional choral ensemble conducts its entire season in Manhattan and Montclair, New Jersey, gaining international recognition, particularly for its promotion of contemporary choral music. Ember's core principles hinge on the belief that music possesses a distinctive ability to impact the human heart and soul, encouraging individuals to attain complete awareness and mindfulness. Ember is dedicated to extending the role of art beyond its inherent value, utilizing it as a medium to illuminate important human issues. This is achieved through inventive programming that seeks to enrich lives, often featuring compositions by contemporary living artists.
Ember Choral Arts is overseen by a Board of Directors and supported by a part-time staff. Dr. Deborah Simpkin King, the Founder & Artistic Director, actively contributes to the dynamic choral scene in the tri-state area and serves the national and international music community through guest conducting and her published work. Additionally, she holds positions as the Director of the Manhattan School of Music Chorale[4] Director of Music and Arts at Trinity Episcopal Church in Asbury Park, NJ[5], and as a conductor within Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival.[6]
In 2009, Ember Choral Arts initiated PROJECT: ENCORE as part of its commitment to new music, positioning itself at the forefront of the new music industry by collaborating with composers to secure post-premiere performances. The organization also commissions and performs numerous premieres and encore presentations. In the 2023-24 season, Ember Choral Arts has expanded its leadership in new music with the introduction of a Composer Residency and the Ember Ablaze Composer Lab[7]
The organization has celebrated several noteworthy achievements, including an exclusive world premiere of a major work at the Salzburg Festival, collaborations with the New Jersey Symphony [8][9], and the premiere of the significant oratorio, "VOICES of the Holocaust"[10] [11]by Michael Jeffrey Shapiro, currently accessible on Spotify and Apple Music.
