Dorian Sarmasan (also known as Sărmășan Dorian-Oliviu, born March 25, 1989) is a game designer and author, promoter of edutainment, and creator of the SDO Learning Methodology in schools and at home.

Life and Education edit

Dorian was born in Sighisoara;[1], as an first child. In Sighișoara, he finished primary and high school. From an early age, he showed interest in art, especially drawing and painting.[2] That influenced his decision to become a graphic designer. When he wasn't even 20 years old, he decided to leave his hometown and move to Bucharest[2]. In 2013. he graduated from the Faculty of Management at USAMV in Bucharest[2].

Career edit

In his second year of university (in 2011.), he began to work as a freelance graphic designer, and at the end of that year, he decided to register his first company in partnership with his current wife Marcela. Although it started as a graphic design agency, very soon it began to provide additional services and developed into a full-service advertising agency.[3]

Word colony edit

In 2019, he started working on the educational board game Word Colony, which he completed in 2021.[3] During this time he developed, created, and tested the game and then produced the first test batch sold in the local market (Romania).

Shortly after, the production and distribution license for the game was acquired by D-TOYS S.A.[3], the largest independent manufacturer of games and puzzles in Romania, and with that step, the expansion of the game begins. At the same time, Dorian received the proposal to become Creative Director at D-TOYS S.A. leading the entire creative department[4].

Word Colony is a board game that can be played by two or more players. The game includes cards with questions from the general culture and each card has a different letter. Players answer the question from each card and if they give the correct answer, they will collect new cards from the pile with which they can build words and word colonies.[5] The winner of the game will be the player who reaches the score of the chosen game type (Quick Game, Master Game, or Full Game) first.

Currently, the Word Colony game has 5 different game extensions, the Fantastic Animals Extension, the Human Body Extension, the Gastronomy of the World Extension, the Around the World Extension, and the Inventions and Inventors Extension[6], whereby players can add new general culture questions to the game with a certain theme and extend the game for more players.

Although it is a board game, in addition to entertainment, one of the main goals of this game is to provide education in a fun and interactive way, not just for the children, but also for parents and elderly players as well. The game promotes edutainment and it is seen as an alternative education method by teachers, educators, and parents. Edutainment is a type of entertainment which provides information that is both educational and entertaining at the same time.[7]

Social activity edit

He is a fully accepted Member of Rotary Club Bucharest, District 2241 Romania and Republic of Moldova, part of Rotary International. In 2018. he was proposed and elected as Rotary Club Bucharest PR Committee Member[8] and today he is a Public Relations Committee President[9].

He is involved in humanitarian projects, such as DaVinci Technical and IT Innovation Contest[10]

Awards edit

  • Awarded in December 2018. by Rotary Club Bucharest for remarkable contribution through service above self[11]
  • Awarded the honorable Rotary International’s Paul Harris Fellow in 2020 with international recognition for his substantial contribution to humanitarian activities.[12]
