The Distillata Company manufactures bottled water in Cleveland, Ohio. Their product line includes artesian spring, distilled, reverse osmosis, and premium drinking water. They also operate a water filtration and drinking fountain division. Distillata delivers products to homes and businesses in Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit, and Trumbull counties. Distributorships and grocery chain contracts bring water to more regions, including Pennsylvania[1] and New York [2] Distillata sources artesian water from their spring in Brimfield, Ohio. It is over 100 feet deep with a natural flow rate of over 100 gallons per minute [3].

Founding edit

German immigrant Peter Diemer founded the company. He delivered distilled water with a horse-drawn wagon through his company, Ohio City Ice and Fuel [4]. Images of the building and horse-drawn delivery carriages are in “Ice and Refrigeration Illustrated” from 1908 [5]. The article states that City Ice launched the Distillata distilled water division in 1903 and opened a dedicated manufacturing plant at 1542 East 24th St., Cleveland, Oh 44114. That building remains the Distillata headquarters today.

City Ice Delivery Co. applied for a patent for the name “Distillata” in 1904[6]. At this time, Peter Diemer was serving as president [7]. There was a record gap until 1920-1930 when Lawrence Hitchcock became president. Hitchcock attended Yale and was a trustee of Lake Erie College [8].

Distillata separated from The City Ice & Fuel Company in 1929 [9]. They bought the distilled water products and Hyklas Beverage, a carbonated ginger ale [10]. At the same time, they approved a contract with the Frigidaire Company. The agreement granted exclusive representation in Cuyahoga County for water cooling services [11].

In 2021, the Family Business and Longevity Awards honored Distillata for its legacy [12].
