Diana Mpyisi (born 1981) is a Rwandan communications expert, television producer, writer, and entrepreneur. She is the founder and CEO of Blue Oceans, a communications and creative agency in Rwanda.
Early Life and Education
editMpyisi was born in Nairobi, Kenya, to Gerald Mpyisi, a former math teacher and IT professional, and Philomena Uwamwezi Mpyisi, an executive secretary. She attended Maxwell Adventist Preparatory School and Makini Primary School[2]in Nairobi before moving to Tanzania, where she joined St. Constantine International School. After relocating to Rwanda following the 1994 genocide, Mpyisi completed her high school education at Rwanda International Secondary School and Hillside International High School in Kampala. She holds a BA in Journalism and Political Science from the University of Johannesburg (2006) and an MA in Creative Media Enterprises from the University of Warwick (2010).
Career
editMpyisi began her career as a news anchor for Rwanda Television in 2001, where she worked during her gap year. She has over two decades of experience in communication management, including roles as Director for Communication and Protocol in the Office of the First Lady of Rwanda and at the Imbuto Foundation.[3] Mpyisi has contributed to various media outlets, She has written extensively for The New Times, covering topics ranging from cultural issues to international relations . Her articles, such as "Agaciro as the Next African Philosophy[4]" and "A Tale of Two Countries: Rwanda and the DRC[5]," reflect her deep engagement with key societal issues in Rwanda .
Since 2013, she has worked as a communications consultant for organizations such as UNICEF, the Global Green Growth Institute, and the National Cyber Security Authority of Rwanda.[6] From 2018 to 2023, Mpyisi was the host and producer of "The Square," a current affairs talk show on Rwanda Television.
Mpyisi is also a co-founder of Spoken Word Rwanda, a platform promoting poetry and spoken word among Rwandan youth, and the founding curator of the Kigali Global Shapers Hub, part of the World Economic Forum's Global Shapers community.
Public Engagements
editMpyisi has participated in numerous conferences and forums, including the Africa Drone Forum, Women Deliver, and the Transform Africa Summit. She has been a speaker at events such as the African Women Storytellers, Africa Communications Week, and TEDx Kampala Youth Talk.
Awards and Recognition
editIn 2017, Mpyisi was awarded the Eisenhower Fellowship, recognizing her leadership and contributions in the field of communication and media.
