Draft:Diamond Creek Vineyards

Diamond Creek Vineyards is a winery in Calistoga, California.[1] The winery is renowned for the production of premium Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from small vineyard sites on its Diamond Mountain estate. Each vineyard site is separated by distinct geological and microclimate differences.[2] Diamond Creek Vineyards was founded by Al Brounstein in 1968 following the purchase of 80 acres on Diamond Mountain. Brounstein ultimately planted 20 of the acres to vines that he smuggled into the Napa Valley from Bordeaux.[3] From the first vintage in 1972, Brounstein harvested, vinified, and bottled the wines separately based on site-specific geological properties. After a long friendship between the Brounstein and Rouzaud families, Louis Roederer purchased Diamond Creek Vineyards in 2020.[4]

Production edit

Diamond Creek Vineyards is divided into four vineyard sites: Gravelly Meadow, Red Rock Terrace, Volcanic Hill, and Lake.[5]

Vineyards: edit

Gravelly Meadow is a 5-acre vineyard site protected by forest in an ancient riverbed. It is in a cooler microclimate with alluvial soils.

Red Rock Terrace is a 7-acre vineyard site on a north-facing hillside comprised of an iron-rich volcanic soil.

Volcanic Hill is an 8-acre vineyard site on a south-facing hillside made up of grey, ashy soil. This vineyard is located in the warmest microclimate.

Lake is a tiny ¾ acre vineyard at the far western end of the estate surrounded by forest. It is in the coolest microclimate with alluvial soils. Lake is a rare wine not made every vintage.

In some years, Diamond Creek Vineyards has produced a Three Vintage Blend and Microclimate wines.[6]
