Robert Dewey Boyd Jr. (Dewey) is an American producer, engineer, mixer, and musician based in Nashville, TN. He is currently front of house for country and bluegrass music legend Ricky Skaggs and Tour Manager for bluegrass singer-songwriter Dan Tyminski[2]. Boyd owns and operates Forty-one Fifteen Studio in Nashville, TN.
Biography
editBoyd was born in Anderson, South Carolina and began playing piano at a young age. He began writing songs as early as elementary school and began exploring live sound through school and church events.
Boyd attended Clemson University and graduated in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He began graduate school to earn a master's degree in mechanical engineering but quickly moved to Nashville in 2009 to pursue professional music production.[3]
Boyd began his production career interning for Shane D Wilson at Pentavarit[1] in Berry Hill beginning in the fall of 2009. Before the end of that year, Boyd began interning under Paul Moak at The Smoakstack[2] after helping to move the studio into its new location in the former Platinum Labs facility. In 2010, Boyd became a full time assistant for Moak, assisting on GRAMMY Award nominated albums The Great Awakening by Leeland and Come To The River by Rhett Walker.
In 2012, Boyd purchased a historic bungalow on Gallatin Pike in East Nashville to convert the building into a recording studio. In October of 2012, he opened the commercial recording studio Forty-One Fifteen with partners Jeff Braun and Taylor Bray.
In 2016, Boyd was invited to fill in as the monitor engineer for six live shows with Ricky Skaggs. In February of 2017, Boyd was hired as Skaggs' full time front of house engineer. In April of 2022, Boyd began substituting as Dan Tyminski's front of house engineer and tour manager. By the fall of that year, he was hired to manage the tour.
Boyd has received several significant award nominations over the course of his career. In 2021, he was accepted as a member of The Recording Academy and continues to serve in the ranks of GRAMMY Award voters.[4] In 2019, Boyd joined the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) and has been nominated for Sound Engineer of the Year four times (2019[5], 2022[6], 2023[7], 2024[8]).
