The Demosthenian Institute was a society of African Americans in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was established at the home of John P. Burr on January 10, 1837.[1]
The Demosthenian Shield was the official publication of the Demosthenian Institute.[2] A weekly newsaper for African Americans it was published in Philadelphia.[3] It was first published in June 1841.[4] It was published every Tuesday and subscriptions were $1 per year. The newspaper included features on prominent Philadelphians such as James Forten and Robert Douglass Sr.[5]
