Part of the 2022 North Indian Ocean cyclone season

Deep Depression BOB 06 was a relatively weak tropical cyclone that killed 32 people during its trek over the Bay of Bengal. The ninth tropical depression of the 2022 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, BOB 06 can be tracked back to a cyclonic circulation over southern Myanmar on August 17. After being upgraded to a deep depression, the storm made landfall near Digha, West Bengal between 13:30 UTC and 14:30 UTC (19:00 IST and 20:00 IST) on August 19.[1]

BOB 06 originated from a weak cyclonic circulation located near southern Myanmar. The JTWC recognized the disturbance and assigned it the identifier Invest 99B the same day[2] The following day, its convective structure rapidly deepended over the Bay of Bengal.[3] The same day, the JTWC unofficially declared it as Tropical Cyclone 04B[4], and the IMD followed suit, upgrading it to Tropical Depression BOB 06.[5] At 06:00 UTC (11:30 IST), BOB 06, further concentrated into a deep depression, just off the coast of West Bengal and Bangladesh.[6] Shortly after intensifying, it made landfall close to Digha, West Bengal between 13:30 UTC and 14:30 UTC (19:00 IST and 20:00 IST) of the same day.[7] At 21:00 UTC (02:30 IST), the JTWC issued its last advisory after making a landfall.[8] Like the previous system, it also didn't dissipate even after making landfall and instead, managed to maintain its intensity. Although, it weakened into a depression on August 21, over northeastern Madhya Pradesh and southeastern Uttar Pradesh,[9][10] it continued to stay afloat for another two days, until on August 23, it weakened into a well-marked low pressure area over eastern Rajasthan and adjoining northwestern Madhya Pradesh.[11] It’s remnants later contributed to the 2022 Pakistan floods.

Impact edit

There were thirty-two cyclone-related deaths as BOB 06 passed through. Five from Bangladesh, [12]3 from Jharkand,[13]6 in Odisha and Madhya Pradesh,[14][15][16]and two were missing and two were washed away in Rajasthan.[17] A trawler from Cox’s Baazar capsized. [12] The system triggered extremely heavy rainfall and high winds in Jharkand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Rajasthan.[13]
