Deep Canvas is an animation tool used to render three-dimensional backgrounds, first used in Walt Disney Pictures' 1999 film Tarzan.[1] The program allows for greater apparent depth and free camera movement within the background.[2]

History edit

Deep Canvas was developed by a team under Daniel St. Pierre for Tarzan.[3] It was later used in 2001's Atlantis: The Lost Empire,[4] and was extensively used in Treasure Planet, where it was used to create "virtual sets."[5][6]

In 2003, the software's developers received an Academy Scientific and Technical Award for the development of Deep Canvas.[7]
