Dawit "Messay" Mellesse (Ge'ez: ዳዊት መሳይ መለሠ) is an Ethiopian singer-songwriter. Since his debut album in 1991, Dawit has become a well respected figure in the Ethiopian music industry. Many of his most known songs through out his career include "Yiberal Libe", "Laltelash Kal Alegn", "Kunjina"

Dawit's career started when he began touring throughout many nightclubs in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. During that time, he became discovered by the well respected Roha Band. Since then, he has peformed on stage along side bands such as Ethio-Stars, Walias, Express among other bands. His recording career began in 1991 G.C/1983 E.C. with the release of his debut album released in Ethiopia by Electra Music Shop. The tape was positively recieved with songs like Yiberal Libe and Man Alegne becoming popular amongst Ethiopian's. The lyrics and melodies were all written by Abebe Mellesse. Shortly after, Dawit emigrated to the US. During his time in the United States, Dawit released 3 CD's with AIT Records and accompanied along side members of the Admas Band. The first being Lottery in 1995. This album demonstrated his versatility as one of the songs on the album was sung completely in English. Four years later, Dawit released Anchin New (You Are The One) in 1999. The album was a collaboration between both Admas and Express Bands and was very successful at the time of the release. His latest release to date is Andeken which was released in 2003 which has become his most popular works to date. Despite his success as a recording artist, Dawit hasn't released a project since Andeken but his musical career has continued as he continues to perform on stage to his fans all around the world. Throughout his career, he has worked alongside other renowned artists such as Teddy Afro, who wrote songs on 2 of his 3 albums, Neway Debebe, Tsehay Yohannes, Tamagne Beyene, and respected other figures.
