David Combs

David Combs (born August 13, 1983)^[1] is a singer songwriter from Washington D.C. He has contributed to the musical projects Spoonboy, Lava Lava, The Max Levine Ensemble, SOMNIA , Bad Moves, and Dim Wizard. He has been participating in DIY shows in the Washington D.C. area and across the United States and the World since 2002. He is known for experimenting across many genres of music including Punk, Anti-folk, Power pop, and Folk punk. He also has been known to have a presence in the leftist political scene. David Combs identifies as nonbinary and describes their identify as fluid using both he/him and they/them pronouns.^[2]

When talking about his musical influences, David Combs has included Billy Bragg, Propagandi, Bikini Kill.^[3]

Early Life

David Combs was born and raised in Takoma Park, Maryland^[2]. He grew up in a Jewish household going to Jewish schools throughout his K-12 education.^[4]

The Max Levine Ensemble

See The Max Levine Ensemble. David Combs was part of this band for the entirety of their time active from 2000-present. This was the first project that David Combs worked on. They created 9 albums and 2 splits.

Spoonboy

Spoonboy was David Comb's persona he used for his singer/songwriter music from 2001-2015. This was a folk inspired mostly acoustic project with a personal and political bend to it.^[3]

Lava Lava

Lava Lava was an acoustic Techno twee group. This was a collaboration band between David Combs (at the time referred to as spoonboy) and Amina Althea. They created one album titled Hey Fragile! in 2004. The music from this band seems to be lost media as the music was only released via CD and Album.

SOMNIA

SOMNIA is a collaboration between David Combs and Erica Freas (RVIVR). They have released one Album under this name. They did a UK tour in 2020.

Dim Wizard

Dim Wizard was a project started by David Combs during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. It was started because it wasn't possible for David Combs and his bandmates to get together in person. He began to write songs for different groups of people with the idea that Dim Wizard would change and is expected to change over time.^[5]
