Dariya Rabiga Gabdull was born on the last day of autumn, (November 30, 1987), in the province of a city that was destined to become the tenth capital in the history of Kazakh statehood in 1994. She was born into a family with fascinating origins. Dariya inherited her irresistible passion for creativity from her parents. "It’s something in the genes, I suppose", the singer confessed in one of her interviews. Her father, a self-taught guitarist, practiced playing the guitar from a young age. ‘’I consider this a significant achievement. My mother sang in the choir during school days and recited poetry on stage at the House of Culture in our city during festive occasions. On my father’s side, my grandfather composed poems and received honorary certificates for his calligraphy skills. He played the dombra, a traditional Kazakh instrument. On my mother’s side, both of my grandmothers had a good ear for music and often showcased beautiful singing at family gatherings. These are fragments from my childhood memories that have left a lasting impression”- says Dariya .
These creative roots led Dariya to connect her life with art. Even as a child, she displayed genuine interest in the arts. Her father encouraged her to explore her talents, so she tried everything: ballet, artistic gymnastics, competitive swimming, ballroom dancing, and even tested her skills in martial arts. However, after experiencing a painful move in karate, Daria realized it wasn’t her path. Instead, her seeking soul gravitated toward another creative circle that captured her full attention. In her passionate pursuit, she made an almost pacifist decision: to fight with words and notes through creating musical compositions rather than physical combat. Her strong aversion to violence began forming at a tender age.
Dariya also demonstrated her gift for composition early on. She wrote her first poems and songs during her school years. In addition to her regular education, she officially attended music school. Her musical journey began with participation in local talent competitions, later performing in school concerts, and eventually taking part in city and nationwide events. However, it was her participation in the groundbreaking first season of the global TV project "X-Factor" in Kazakhstan in 2011 that truly brought her fame. Dariya convincingly won, becoming the first artist from Kazakhstan and Central Asia to sign a contract with the legendary music label ‘Sony Music Entertainment.
Since then, her solo career began, often testing her resilience. In 2012, Dariya Gabdull participated in the international competition ‘Slavianski Bazaar,’ achieving fourth place. In the same year, she tried her luck in the Swedish Eurovision selection. In 2013, she was invited by the renowned Kazakh pop star Batyrkhan Shukenov to compose the soundtrack for the romantic comedy film ‘Prepod.’ The song ‘Qalasan gana’ became part of the film’s soundtrack, providing Dariya with invaluable experience. To this day, Daria fondly remembers her acquaintance with Batyrkhan. He supported her by performing a duet during the high-rating vocal TV show finale. Later, he involved her in the film’s sound production. One of her most vivid memories is being invited to the anniversary celebration of the legendary singer, an evening shared among family, friends, and colleagues.
In early 2014, Dariya released her music online, and her solo career continued to test her mettle.”
She released her first E.P. “X-Periment” online, which included five compositions: “Keledi Menin” (Sometimes I Want), “Qasymda” (Next To Me), “Mumkin Emes” (It’s Impossible), “MamaPapa” (MomDad), and “Baqytty bolamyn” (I Will Be Happy). The year 2015 marked the release of new songs for Dariya, along with active concert activity as an indie musician. However, health issues began to emerge. Deteriorating well-being prevented her from pursuing creativity at her usual pace, leading Dariya to take an academic leave while temporarily ceasing performances. Nevertheless, her creative work continued without interruption. Daria actively engaged in music, resulting in a collection of piano compositions suitable for beginners in children’s music schools, a compilation of poems, electronic instrumental compositions, and songs in various languages."
From childhood, Dariya’s interests extended beyond music and poetry. She also had a passion for fashion, often sharing her ideas with journalists. Recognizing that audiences perceive artists not only through sound but also visually, Dariya considered the style she preferred for self-presentation on stage. Observing her mother sewing traditional Kazakh patterns onto clothing and her grandmother embroidering designs on a “zhaulyk” (a traditional Kazakh robe) she wore from the age of fifty, Dariya decided to continue the folkloric tradition. Kazakh women have long valued “kamzoly” (vests) and “shapans” (coats), which combine simplicity, comfort, and visual aesthetics. A beautiful “shapan” provides warmth and uplifts the mood with its embroidered ornaments and unique designs. To combat the blues resulting from the absence of concerts, Dariya started her own line of custom-made “shapans.” Each piece featured eclectic and modern color combinations. Although her exclusive “shapans” captured attention, in 2017, Dariya received an invitation to participate in the first season of the sensational singing competition “I am a Singer” in neighboring China. The show had previously introduced the world to the extraordinary vocal abilities of Kazakh singer Dimash Kudaibergen. Daria competed alongside other renowned participants such as Marsel, Adam, Erden Zhaksybek, Zhangali Abishev, and Kairat Tuntekov.
In 2018, Dariya pursued a master’s degree in anthropology, opening new horizons for her inner exploration. In spring 2019, she participated in the official Kazakh dubbing project for the premiere of the animated film “The Lion King.” (Арыстан патша). Dariya voiced the character Nala, originally portrayed by Beyoncé. Currently, Dariya Gabdull’s musical repertoire includes 73 published compositions available for listening on global digital platforms. She has released songs in five languages, including instrumental tracks for both dance and artistic purposes, remixes, and plans to publish older songs she wrote long ago. Among the intriguing details of Dariya Gabdull’s biography are her proficiency in four languages, her knowledge of music production, mixing, and mastering, her interest in photography and videography, and her love for spending time with family while enjoying movies.
