Dardanelle & Russellville 8 is a 4-4-0 built by the Cooke Locomotive Works in for the Denver Texas & Forth Worth Railroad as #9. In 1890, it was sold to the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railway. In 1906, the locomotive was sold to the Dardanelle and Russellville Railroad of Dardanelle, Arkansas, where it was renumbered to #8. In 1939 the locomotive made an appearance in Jesse James (film).[1][2] It operated for the railroad until 1940, when it was later sold to 20th Century Fox Malibu, California.[3] In 1971, it was sold to the Shortline Enterprises of Cucamonga, California. In 1975, it was moved to Virginia City, Nevada, where it was reletterd and renumbered as Virginia and Truckee No. 28.[4]

In October 1979 it was relettered and renumbered as Sierra Railway No. 8 and did a doubleheader with SERA 3.[5] On May 1981 the locomotive went to the California State Railroad Museum being relettered as Shortline Enterprises and participated at Railfair 1981 for the grand opening alongside with MCL Co. 2, D&R 8, BHL Co. 1, ATSF 5, SP 1269, Tom Thumb (1927 Replica), HL Co. Ltd. 10, SP 4449, UP 844, Jupiter (locomotive), Stephenson's Rocket (1979 Replica), and a newly restored UP 3985 where Gov. Stanford, C. P. Huntington, V&T 13 Empire, V&T 12 Genoa, V&T 21 J. W. Bowker, NPC 12 Sonoma, NSL 1, ATSF 1010, NWP 112, UP 4466, and SP 4294 live, while UP 4466 is undergoing restoration into operating condition.[6][7][8][9][10] On December 2004, V&T 22 Inyo as (CP 60 Jupiter), and D&R 8 as (UP 119) we're doing a Christmas Hollywood Film.[11][12] On July 2022 the locomotive was unserviceable and participated at the great western steam up alongside with V&T 11 Reno, V&T 12 Genoa, V&T 18 Dayton, V&T 21 J. W. Bowker, V&T 22 Inyo, The Gleenbrook, (Eureka locomotive), and SP 18. On July 2022 the V&T 21 J. W. Bowker and V&T 12 Genoa were on temporary loan to the Nevada State Railroad Museum for the Great Western Steam Up alongside with V&T 11 Reno, V&T 12 Genoa, V&T 18 Dayton, V&T 21 J. W. Bowker, V&T 22 Inyo, NCNGRR 5, The Glenbrook, Eureka (locomotive), DS&C.V.R. 1 Joe Douglass, D&R 8, A&W 1, V&T 25, SCPC Co. 2, SP 18, BM&S 1 and V&T 1 Lyon (2020 Replica).[13][14][15][16] As of 2024, the locomotive is stored being restored into operating condition and V&T 12 Genoa and V&T 21 J. W. Bowker are about to head back to the California State Railroad Museum while AT&SF 1010 is restoring into operating condition.[17][18]
