The DRDO Ugram is an indian Assault Rifle developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with a private industry partner, Hyderabad-based Dvipa Armour India Private Limited.[1] Unveiled under the name "Ugram," which translates to "ferocious," this assault rifle is designed to meet the operational requirements of the Indian armed forces, paramilitary units, and state police entities. This rifle is currently undergoing testing and trial phases.[2][3][4]

Development
editThe project, initiated as a mission-mode endeavor two years ago, aimed at creating a cutting-edge assault rifle.[3] The design and development were carried out by the DRDO's Pune-based Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE). Following the concept of Development cum Production Partner (DcPP), a private industry partner, Dvipa Armour India, actively collaborated during both the design and production phases.[4]
Testing and Trials
editBefore induction into service, the Ugram Assault Rifle will undergo rigorous testing, including internal assessments, acceptance trials, and user trials. These trials will evaluate the rifle's performance under various conditions, such as high altitudes, deserts, extreme heat, underwater, and harsh winter environments. A dedicated board of Army officers will oversee the acceptance procedure, ensuring that the rifle meets the specific requirements outlined by the armed forces.[3]
Collaborative Efforts
editAnkath Raju, the director of ARDE, highlighted the collaboration between DRDO and the private industry partner, Dvipa Armour India for developing this assault rifle.[4][5] This joint venture has resulted in the rapid development of the Ugram Assault Rifle in just 100 days.[1] The partnership aims to address the significant shortfall in assault rifles, particularly considering challenges in procuring weapons from international sources.[3]
Design
editThe Ugram Assault Rifle will be chambered for the 7.62 x 51 mm caliber. It is intended to adhere to the General Staff Qualitative Requirements (GSQRs) of the Indian Army, ensuring stringent standards are met. Weighing less than four kilograms, the rifle will boast an effective range of 500 meters.[4] It will feature a 20-round magazine and offer firing options in both single and full-auto modes. The design is comparable to the latest AK and AR type rifles, with a rivet-free construction, enhancing its durability.[3]
