Casey Michel is an American journalist and author. He is currently the director of the Combating Kleptocracy Program at the Human Rights Foundation.[1]
Michel is best-known for his work on offshore financing, illicit wealth, foreign influence, and dark money networks. He is the author of two books: American Kleptocracy (2021) and Foreign Agents (2024), the latter of which received starred reviews from Kirkus and Publishers Weekly. He has testified in front of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on the topic.[2]
Michel has also written extensively on Russian colonialism, and how Russia has been overlooked in the broader sweep of European colonial conquests and legacies.[3][4][5] He has been credited by BBC as the journalist who "kickstarted talk of decolonizing Russia."[6]
In August 2024, shortly after the publishing of Foreign Agents, Michel was sanctioned by the Russian government.[7]
Michel lives in New York and is married to Versha Sharma.
