Description edit
The Atrium (Light Well) is located inside the Casa Batlló's in Barcelona, Spain. It was designed my Antoni Gaudí, and the Atrium is a key factor in what makes this building unique. The lightwell distributes air and light into the house through a skylight. Gaudí had an obsession with light which caused him to implement this into every corner of the Casa Batlló. He decorated the walls with different tones of blue tiles, as well as 3D diamond pattern all around the walls.
History edit
The overall function of the Atrium was to make sure all levels of the house were properly lit and ventilated. The different tones of blue contribute to Gaudí's admiration of light and how it reflects on different surfaces. The initial project was meant to be a complete rebuild but Gaudí convinced Batlló to just refurbish the facade and the interior. In 1900's, Batlló bought the building and hired Gaudí to refurbish the entire building.
