Carmen Cuba is an award-winning casting director based in Los Angeles. Cuba is known for her work on the Netflix series Stranger Things[1][2]. Cuba's other notable TV credits include the Star Wars series
The Acolyte, the Marvel limited series Wonder Man for Destin Cretton, I Am The Night by Patty Jenkins, and Mr. and Mrs Smith for Donald Glover. Cuba has also been the casting director on movies such as The Matrix Resurrection by Lana Wachowski, The Power of the Dog by Jane Campion and NOPE by Jordan Peele.
Career
editCuba’s career began in 1999 with filmmaker Larry Clark on the films Bully and Ken Park. Her journey started as a casting assistant where she quickly demonstrated an uncanny ability to recognize and match acting talent with the right character.
Her long-standing collaborations with Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh has seen Cuba cast everything from his experimental film Bubble to last year’s Magic Mike’s Last Dance. Cuba demonstrated a knack for bringing together ensembles of actors who not only embodied their roles perfectly but also exhibited an extraordinary synergy, elevating the storytelling experience. Soderbergh’s admiration for her work led him to state in an interview, “I don’t hire Carmen to agree with me, I hire her to inform me.”
But perhaps her most well-known casting work is on the hit Netflix series "Stranger Things.[3]" Cuba was able to assemble a group of young and relatively unknown actors[4] to cultivate an on-screen chemistry that captivated global audiences. Cuba's instinctive understanding of the narrative and character nuances enabled her to match actors with roles in which they could flourish, thereby fostering an authentic and engaging viewing experience.
Cuba's approach to casting, though, is more than merely finding an actor that fits a role. She has consistently demonstrated a commitment to promoting diversity and representation within the industry. She understands that cinema is a powerful medium that shapes societal perceptions, and in her capacity as a casting director, she strives to ensure that those on the screen reflect the diversity of those watching.
