Cancer Mental Health Awareness Month (CMHAM)[1] is an annual international mental health campaign organized to support cancer patients and their loved ones. Awareness, content creation, fundraising, and resource mapping are integral parts of the campaign - one that aims to span all types of cancer, rather than traditional disease-specific awareness months based around the physical diagnosis. This month also extends support to family members, partners, caregivers, and children of cancer patients, as mental health issues are persistent among many non-patients.
There are over 25 Cancer Awareness Months dedicated to specific diagnosis types of the disease, but just one for mental health.
Other notable Cancer Awareness Months include Breast Cancer Awareness Month[2], for example.
History edit
Cancer Mental Health Awareness Month was founded in 2023 by the cancer and chronic illness advocacy organization Chaotic Good[3]. The organization's founder and board members are all cancer patients or family members of cancer patients, and they recognized the ubiquitous mental health challenges that cancer patients faced.
The aim of Chaotic Good and CMHAM is to promote open humanistic dialogue as a starting point for individual mental health. Fundraising for therapeutic support, wellness events, research, and content creation is the goal of the promotional campaigns defined each year by participating organizations and members.
