Caledonia High School is a public high school in Caledonia, Mississippi, United States. Caledonia is a part of the Lowndes County School District.
History edit
2008 Tornado edit
On January 10th, 2008, a strong tornado severely damaged the school. When the tornado reached its maximum intensity, it hit the football stadium where the press box and concessions were destroyed. Several metal power poles were bent over, and several trees were also knocked down. Numerous student and teacher vehicles were pelted with gravel, flipped, and sometimes even flung. "Five school buses were damaged, two of which were flipped over, and one of which was lifted up and ripped apart with the chassis landing in one of the buildings and the frame landing on top of a building." One of these buses landed on the gymnasium while the frame of another landed on the destroyed vocational center. The tornado then left the school complex and moved across the south side of Caledonia.[3]
Confederates Controversy edit
Before 2020 Caledonia's mascot was the confederates, often shortened to 'Feds.' However, amid the social reform and Black Lives Matter movement of 2020, eyes were drawn onto the school for its use of the mascot since 1956. A group called "Unify Caledonia" successful gained enough support for the school board to change the name. After a successful poll, students from the Elementary, Middle, and High schools were able to choose between different mascot names. They settled on the Cavaliers.[4]
Recent Success edit
In the following years, Caledonia rebuilt the high school including a band hall, trades building, and an arts hall. The vocational building was rebuilt in Columbus. In recent years, the school has achieved academic, athletic, and artistic success, earning the title of a 2023 National Blue Ribbon school.[5]
Growth edit
In November of 2015, 2.5 million dollars was allotted by the Lowndes County School District to build a new field house for the football team. The bid also included an adjacent practice field, lockers, lighting, and more.
Currently a new gymnasium is underway after a 7.1 million dollar bid from West Brothers Construction.
