Dr. C Chandrashekara (born in 1947) is an Indian contemporary visual artist. His works have been exhibited in international exhibitions, such as the Third Havana Biennial, Cuba in 1989, and have been featured in numerous public and private collections including the Lalit Kala Akademi, Kala Bhavan, NGMA[1] and Galerie De’Arts [2]. He has actively participated in the literary and contemporary cultural movements and has held key positions in various institutions.[3].

Life and Career edit

Born in Bangalore, Dr. C Chandrashekara achieved his Diploma in drawing and painting in 1973 and commenced his career as a drawing teacher at Bangalore City Corporation School. Subsequently, he pursued a Diploma in drawing and painting, followed by a master's course in arts in 1975 at Ken School of Arts, Bangalore. In 1980, he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Graphic printmaking from Kala Bhavan. In 2012, he was conferred with an honorary doctorate in literature[4] by Mysore University for his contributions.

His artistic journey led him to explore various mediums, including graphic etchings and oil paintings, which he employed in his various artistic endeavors. He created etchings[5] using intaglio techniques and worked with lithography and serigraphy. Over the years, he adapted a wide range of media to his works. He was called "Stitch Chandrashekara" [3] due to his artwork series, Stitch. He also curated several artist camps[6] across India organized by national and regional centers of Lalit Kala Akademi, Ken School of Art and SAARC.

Dr. C Chandrashekara was Dean of Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts, Mysore from 1989 to 1990. From 1995 to 1998, he also served as Chairman of the Karnataka Lalit Kala Akademi. In the late 90s, he was appointed as a Member of the Board of Studies at Bangalore University and Kuvempu University. He was also empaneled as a judge[7] in the selection committee for the Karnataka State Film Awards 2011.

Dr. C Chandrashekara had several solo exhibitions like Introspections at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, Bangalore; Lalit Kala Academi, New Delhi; Corner House Gallery, Hyderabad; and Kala Academy, Goa[11] in 2011. Another notable exhibition was Image and Impression, Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai in 2010[12]. He was also part of group shows Perspectives of Karnataka Modern Art, NGMA, Bangalore[13] in 2017, and All India Art Exhibition celebrating Golden Jubilee of Independence, Renaissance Art Gallery, Bangalore in 1998. He was invited to showcase his work in many national[14] and international exhibitions.
