Biography

edit

Youth, Studies, and Early Career

edit

Bruce Toussaint was born on October 17, 1973, in Asnières-sur-Seine (Hauts-de-Seine). He is the son of Jean-Claude Toussaint, an IT specialist, and Mercedes Ramos Mathias (1948–2021), an accountant; he has a younger sister.

Graduating from the former Montpellier branch of the Centre de formation professionnelle des journalistes (CFPJ), Bruce Toussaint began his career in 1991 at the radio station O'FM, supported by Charles Pasqua.[1]

1994-2011: Canal+, I-Télé, and Jimmy

edit

He became a sports journalist on Canal+ in 1994, during the period when its founding president, André Rousselet, was ousted by one of the group's shareholders.[2] After Philippe Gildas's departure in 2001, he collaborated on the show Nulle part ailleurs and hosted the weekend editions during the show's final season until 2002.

On August 31, 1997, in Paris, he was near the wrecked car of British Princess Diana Spencer, who was with Egyptian heir Dodi Al-Fayed. According to Toussaint, he was the first to announce her death in France, on Canal+.[3]

In 2001, following a restructuring plan and the merger of I-Télé and Canal+ newsrooms, Bruce Toussaint joined the news channel I-Télé, along with many other Canal+ journalists, as I-Télé underwent significant staff reductions due to changes within the Canal+ group.[4] Starting in January 2002, he co-hosted the midday news on Canal+ and I-Télé with Stéphanie Renouvin. This format continued for the 2002-2003 season before being removed from the channel's schedule.[5]

After hosting the evening news session (6 p.m. - 9 p.m.) on I-Télé during the 2003-2004 season, he briefly hosted the debate show N'ayons pas peur des mots on the same channel in September 2004.[6]

Following Thierry Gilardi's departure to TF1, Samuel Étienne replaced him on N'ayons pas peur des mots, and Toussaint took over La Matinale in October. The show, co-hosted by Stéphanie Renouvin, was broadcast live and unencrypted every morning on Canal+ and I-Télé during its first season. In September 2006, Élé Asu replaced Stéphanie Renouvin as the news presenter.

In April 2007,[7] despite being considered to take over the midday slot on Canal+, Bruce Toussaint chose to continue with La Matinale for a fourth season. He announced that he had written three episodes of a television series about the behind-the-scenes at Matignon for Canal+. In the lead-up to the 2007 French presidential election, Toussaint hosted three forty-five-minute debates between various political figures on I-Télé every Sunday afternoon, titled On ne va pas être d'accord.

In 2008, he presented two episodes of Breaking News on Jimmy, a magazine that anticipated fictitious events such as the arrest of Osama bin Laden and a terrorist attack involving a deadly virus.[8]

In June 2008, Bruce Toussaint left La Matinale to take over L'Édition spéciale in September, succeeding Samuel Étienne as the host of Canal+'s midday show.[9][10][11] Maïtena Biraben succeeded him as the host of La Matinale.

In the summer of 2009, Bruce Toussaint hosted a current events-based game show, Le News Show, which aired on Canal+ in access prime-time, replacing Le Grand Journal. The show also aired during the Christmas holidays in 2009 and 2010 and again in the summer of 2010.[12][13][14] Although he was considered to replace Michel Denisot, he did not take over Le Grand Journal.[15]

Starting in September 2010, he hosted a Sunday midday show on Canal+, Tout le monde il est beau, tout le monde il est gentil, which reviewed the week's news in a lighthearted manner. However, the show had a low average audience of 350,000 viewers.[16][17]

In 2011 on the Jimmy channel, Bruce Toussaint co-hosted the show Bonsoir Monsieur le Président with Caroline Roux. This show simulated the first interview of a newly elected president, featuring various candidates such as Marine Le Pen, Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, Hervé Morin, and Manuel Valls.[18]

2011-2013: Europe 1, France 2, and D8

edit

In August 2011, he left the Canal+ group to host the morning show on Europe 1, replacing Guillaume Cahour. Ariane Massenet took over hosting Le News Show.[19] The Sunday show Tout le monde il est beau, tout le monde il est gentil was canceled, with a "best of" version titled Tout le monde il est beau, tout le monde il est bronzé, hosted by Cyrille Eldin, airing during the summer of 2011.[20]

In October 2011, he joined the public service and hosted the magazine Un monde six jeunes on France 2.[21] In September 2012, while continuing to host the morning show on Europe 1, he hosted the debate show Vous trouvez ça normal ?! every Friday in the late evening on France 2.[22] Due to poor ratings, lack of originality, and preparation according to media critics,[23] the show, considered too expensive for France Télévisions, was taken off the air on December 21, 2012.[24]

Having no shows left to host, he officially left the France Télévisions group on December 21, 2012, at midnight, after stating, "I am leaving France 2, which treated me poorly."[25]

In May 2013, due to disappointing ratings, he was not renewed for the next season of Europe 1's[26] morning show. He was replaced by Thomas Sotto[27] in September 2013.

2013-2018: I-Télé, France 5, and France Info

edit

Starting on August 26, 2013, returning to work for the Canal+ group, he hosted the new morning show on I-Télé, Team Toussaint, la matinale info, alongside Amandine Bégot.[28][29]

In September 2016, he left the Canal+ group and joined the public service, at France Télévisions. Until 2017, he hosted the show C polémique on France 5 every Sunday at 7:45 p.m.[30][31]

From September 2017 to July 2018, he joined France Info radio and took over the station's morning show, succeeding journalist Fabienne Sintes. He led the 7/9 slot, which included the 8:30 a.m. Toussaint-Aphatie segment from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on France Info. In 2018, he left the public service once again.[32][33][34][35]

2018-2023: BFM TV

edit

On May 14, 2018, Vincent Giret, director of France Info, announced that Bruce Toussaint would leave the morning show at the end of the season, information confirmed by Toussaint himself.[36] At the same time, it was announced that he would join the private channel BFM TV to host Grand Angle from Monday to Thursday between 10 p.m. and midnight, starting on August 27.[37]

From the start of the season until early January 2019, he temporarily replaced Apolline de Malherbe as the host of Et en même temps (6 p.m. - 8 p.m.) on Sundays, during her maternity leave.[38]

In the fall of 2019, he was given the role of hosting Tonight Bruce Infos (10 p.m. - midnight). This new program was a revamped version of Grand Angle. The show was centered around a panel consisting of Jeanne Daudet, Catherine Tricot, Benoît Gallerey, and Bruno Jeudy.[39]

In the fall of 2020, he was replaced by Maxime Switek in the 10 p.m. - midnight slot from Monday to Thursday and was later assigned a new slot from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., where he hosted a show called Le Live Toussaint. He hosted the show for the last time on December 1.[40][41]

2024 - Present: TF1

edit

Since January 8, 2024, Bruce Toussaint has been the host of Bonjour ! La Matinale TF1 from Monday to Friday.[42][43][44]

edit

Bruce Toussaint is married to Catherine Fruchon, a literary journalist at RFI. He is the father of a son and a daughter.[45]

On January 26, 2021, during his show Le Live Toussaint, he revealed that he is colorblind.

He shares a passion for poker with his friend and producer, Alexandre Amiel.[46]

In March 2021, the Lisieux prosecutor's office opened an investigation into his participation in a clandestine dinner in Deauville, despite the restrictions imposed by the government during the COVID-19 pandemic.[47]

On Tuesday, October 19, 2021, he announced via a tweet on his Twitter account that his mother had passed away suddenly in the street, despite efforts by firefighters to resuscitate her. In a 2016 interview published by the daily Libération, he mentioned that his mother had been an accountant.[48][49][50]

In April 2023, his first book was published by Stock: Heureusement, elle n'a pas souffert. It discusses the theme of mourning his two parents.[51][52]
